'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

I have an all consuming interest in firearms.
I'm going for my third CCW class next week. I did attend a Cooper class three of four years back with my son. Fin Aagaard was there. If you don't know who that is, he was a big game hunter and writer.

It's also the average shootout range.

I think the average is supposed to be within 6-8 feet. I read that a long time ago so I could be wrong. There may be a breakdown between police shootings and civilians. [Cops are civilians but I didn't know how to write the description] I would imagine that the police lengths are greater. I did a IDPA scenario where I was supposed to punch the target with my weak hand and then draw and shoot one handed. That's where I think I heard the 6-8 feet. Also, I was glad to get my hand out of the way before the multiple blasts shredded the target.

First, I have read EVERY reply and comment on this thread, so I'm not shooting off the cuff.

Second, I have witnessed, on a personal level, the tragedy involved in a child shooting themselves with a weapon.

The child found a loaded semi .380, with a round in the chamber(Blatant rule violation #1) and shot himself in the face with it. Luckily, the 5 year old survived the point blank head shot.

Yes, I'll admit your safety bullet would have probably prevented this accident. But if the kids trash ass parents had NOT left a chambered cartridge in that weapon and had NOT left that gun in a nightstand within easy reach of a child, the accident would not have happened either.

What makes you think these people would have went to the trouble of buying and using your invention?

And as far as cops and other professionals having firearms accidents, guess what...firearms are dangerous...don't be careless. I work around VERY dangerous equipment so I have very little sympathy for adults that have misshaps with firearms.

As a 10 year old, I was left alone and armed at night with my younger brother so my Father could make a living. I was taught the rules and knew to break them meant someone could die. Education is the key.

I admire the fact that you have hung around to defend yourself, but your trying to sell to the wrong crowd. I would not buy your product nor advise anyone else to, except for the JBT's that conduct trigger happy no-knock raids.

One last thing, your replies would carry a lot more weight if you would make use of the spell-check feature.

I'd be a little suspicious. This lawyer may just waiting for class action cases to come a rollin in AGAINST you.

I remember the first time I saw that cartoon. It was a good thing I was already laying on the floor.
The 2 by 4 bit is a joke about the greatest mule trainer that ever lived. An owner was having trouble with his so he brought the mule over. After agreeing to train the mule, the trainer picked up a 2 by 4 and hit the mule right between the eyes as hard as he could. The owner was horrified. The trainer calmly replied, "First, you have to get their attention".

I really don't know very much about guns, so I can't comment on your device except to say "Good luck, and I hope it works."

But I do understand politics a little bit. So here's a warning. If your product truly works, the Left will come after you and your bullet with both barrels. (Pun intended.) They don't want safer guns. They don't want safe gun owners. They want no guns. Period. Your success will be a red flag to them.

I have checked. Michiganlegislature.org is my source. I don't know about other states, but GOA doesn't do their homework, or flat out lies. They lied about the CCW law as well which they sided with the Brady people. They said it wasn't shall issue. BS.

It is also the minimum distance where you are safe from an edged weapon if your firearm is still secured in your duty holster.

Studies with trained police officers have shown that if a suspect is inside the 21' zone he/she will cut you before you can draw and fire your weapon. The zone increases if the firearm is concealed.

A guy charged me with a knife in a Las Vegas bar about 13 years ago. I slid to the side at the last second, and he jammed the knife into the hardwood bar.
