'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

What is the "21 foot rule"?

That happens to be the distance in which most lethal shootouts take place.

It's also the distance than an attacker can cover in the time it takes the average police officer to draw and fire his sidearm. Allowing an assailant to close to within 21' presents the possibility that the officer could be injured or killed; even if he manages to fire his weapon and hits his attacker. Within 21', a charging attacker's momentum will carry him to the officer, even if he's been mortally wounded.

Yeah, I'll show you my great idea: an empty chamber. It doesn't disable your weapon if you screw up. Your device does. My device is cheaper and doesn't disable the weapon if you forget to rack the slide. Beats yours by a mile.

You are missing the point: when somebody needs a gun, they need it NOW. You can recover from dropping the hammer on an empty chamber a LOT faster than you can recover from disabling your weapon.

If he had had the Safety Bullet in his gun he would be dead. If he had his gun in a safe he would be dead. If he had his gun in a gun lock of any kind he would be dead. If his gun was not loaded he would be dead.


He was lucky. Now go to Yahoo type in Accidental Shooting and start reading some of the 60,000 stories of people taht were involved in an accidental shooting and you tell me would it have saved any of those lives.

Almost all of them.

That's not correct. It's a measurement in which a person with a knife is a direct threat to a person with a holstered firearm. I believe Massad Ayoob was one, if not, the first to publish the phrase.

It's also the average shootout range. So, by most standards, people are holding off opening fire until the last possible second.

I actually saw that happen once, guy pulled a knife, other guy pulled a gun, guy with the knife stabbed the guy with the gun. Happened very fast. They were very close, and the guy with the gun was not serious.

Not to mention that even if you do mortally wound your attacker with multiple shots to the center mass, he (or she for you PC fans) can have up to 20 seconds of oxygenated blood in their brain pan allowing them do even more damage to their intended victim.

Rex Applegate was signing autographs for Gerber and a Mexican friend of his stopped to see him. I think Sheriff Jim Wilson was standing behind the Colonel. They started bad mouthing Mexicans just to kid him and by the time I turned my head the guy had put his fingers under his sweater, unlatched the sheath, opened the knife and had it out pointing at Applegate. The Colonel didn't flinch and casually said, "Hell, I could have shot you by the time you did all of that". The Mexican laughed and said, "It wouldn't have done you any good. I'm wearing a vest."
I looked and I could see the outline of a kevlar vest.
If you look at my profile page, there's a picture on the left wall of the Colonel and me. I really miss him. He was one of the nicest gentleman I had ever met.
