'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

Abundy,

I agree with you if a gun is on your person there is no need for this. You have controll of your weapon and I doubt anyone could get it from you. But if you go home and put your gun down put one in the chamber.

An officer was killed about a month ago by his three year old son. He placed his firearm on the table and his son pulled it from the holster and shot him in the back. He died in surgery.

If I were to see that someone was working on passing a law to require these in all guns I would fight it and have the NRA help me.

Hey, dude, what's wrong with Rambo? Besides the fact that Sly would love everybody but the elite to be disarmed, I mean? I usta pop over to my brother's place in my cammies after work and my nephews would ALWAYS politely say, "Hi, Unca Rambo."

I liked the original movie with Arnold S. chasing the alien in the SA jungles when they had the man-portable GE Gatling gun. I wish I could recall the name of the flick!

The one you're thinking of was Predator.

Hey, dude, what's wrong with Rambo?

I wouldn't base any tactical decision-making on that movie's scenarios. It's of the "Six-gun-never-run-empty" school.

When I go home I secure my firearm. I'm not using this product - ever. I have access to my firearm and if I need it I don't want to have to remember to rack the slide twice.

Safety education, proper firearms training and a good dose of common sense are what is needed.

Thank you for your feedback. I will always answer any serious question. What I would like to do is to send each group some of these devices and have them try them. One of the ladies that runs one of the Ammo companies that is going to build these for me can give you some feedback as to what she thinks of this. Her name is Terry Johnson you can reach her at 540-220-4519 ask her directly what she thinks.

I am pro gun and intend on getting that message out also. I am working with Newsweek who is going to be publishing a storey on this when it hits the market and would love to be able to say that those groups have seen and tested it and think it is a good idea. If it isn't, it isn't. I think its the best safety device yet.

It affords a level of safety yet makes your gun ready as quickly as you can cycle the action.

On the off chance that he's mis-laid his glasses...

WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO ANSWER MY QUESTIONS?? HOW QUICKLY CAN YOUR DEVICE BE EXTRACTED IF IT'S BEEN ACCIDENTALLY SET OFF? CAN IT BE DONE IN LESS TIME THAN IT TAKES AN INTRUDER TO CROSS ONE'S BEDROOM?

Maybe he'll notice that.

So does simply keeping the chamber empty, but that wouldn't (a) stick money in your pocket and (b) turn the gun into a paperweight if you forget to rack the slide.

You'd better pray this doesn't take off--you'll end up impoverished by the American legal system in wrongful-death suits.

I know... not to mention the totally impossible stunts they gimmick up with their Buck Rogers weaponry...

I can think of NO movie one could safely base any tactical decions on, and that includes the GOOD ones, like The Patriot or We Were Soldiers... After hollyweird gets done with even the most accurate info, it's useless and deadly to anyone senseless enough to follow it.

Thanks for the feedback. You are aware that over 70,000 people have died from accidental shooting since 1979 and more than 350,000 have been injured? Do the research then come and tell me its just people that don;t know any better. Its everyones problem and the graves are full of people that knew what they were doing. Its a fact do the research then tell me I am wrong. I will bet you know of someone who has accidentally fired his gun.

Go to Yahoo and type in Accidental Shooting and start reading.

What is the purpose of owning a gun then? Might as well
get ride of it, because it is useless at that point.

It seems that you have a problem talking with out insulting. No I am not a fellon. Are you? I live on a yacht and travel a lot of countrys freak when they see a hand gun. The laws of every country vary and so its easier to simply not have one. Besides my 12 guage and 30-06 do just fine.

Are you suggesting police officers carry your invention in their duty weapons? I can see that going over real well.

You are aware that 47.3% of all statistics are made up on the spot?

When I talked to the director of Brady he tried to start preaching the anti gun sermon and I told him that is not what I am about I am for making guns as safe as I can. After he steped off the pew he told me that he has guns and loves to shoot!!

The common ground here is safety. NRA promotes it and so does the Brady Group. No one is taking my gun away its guarenteed unless I accidentally shoot someone or my gun is involved in one. Than I get to go to jail for 10 to 20.

I like your handle is that an offer?

I saw all those other ideas and they have their place. Once fired what do you do with them - eject them load a lethal round.

What happens when someone grabs you gun and pulls the trigger and the cap - snaps he cycles the gun and shoots you. What happens when he fires your gun at you with the SB in place. It locks it up solid and no new lethal bullet can be introduced. Your A-- is saved.

I thought of all that go do a patent search there are a thousand ideas out there, but nothing like this.

Mighty,

If your gun had been in a safe would she still be alive. Or how about a gun lock? Name one device that gives you a level of safety and yet is ready in less than a second? There is only one.

What happens when you forget to cycle the slide (still waking up, intruder's in your bedroom) and you fire at the intruder with the safety bullet inserted? Your gun is now a rock, and your A-- is Grass.

You have obviously never been in a firefight. Go out and get shot at a couple times, then come back and report on how well your toy worked.
