'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

This guy is probably trolling from HCI, et.al. to obtain arguments against the product in order for them to begin working on counter arguments. I doubt he has consulted the NRA and/or LE. LE would NEVER advoate using this product - it would get cops killed.

Agree 100%.......I am not really impressed with this rant that keeps repeating ..... "even the NRA guys like it or something to that effect" Just because one is a member of the NRA does not make them any more or less an expert. My kid was a life member of the NRA at 3 months of age..... My Grandfather bought my life membership for me when I was 12.

I'll make a SWAG that two thirds of the NRA have never even handled a handgun as they are mostly shotgunners and competitive rifle shooters and hunters with "to the best of my knowledge as observed and experienced" very small number of handgunners per se...... The I am the NRA thing he keeps quoting ??? So what ?

I will stop posting to this thread as of now as I just find the entire concept disruptive and silly.

I have to say this guy got one h#ll of a free market survey!

My biggest objection is that this thing adds one more level to the essential training needed to operate a firearm under stressful conditions, not to mention the added time factor. Plus, practice makes permanent. Was'nt there a situation a few years back where some LA police got killed or injured because their range training was that after you fired you lowered the weapon, then raised it again?

Yes, I've been following it, another case of the road to hell being paved with good intentions.
Keep your weapons secured, teach your children what they are and what they can do, and there won't be very many accidents.
Oh the horror, kids killed every year, True it is sad when
that happens, but taken as a percentage of the population it is rather miniscule.
The activists don't have a problem flying where safety is a function of "passenger miles" even though they KNOW that some planes fall from the sky every year.

No wonder why my Glock has no external safeties. It's the safest gun on the market.

No even close. There have been so many Negligent Discharges from Glocks due to lack of training that when gun people hear of an ND the assumption is that it involves a Glock. You'll notice that I stated a lack of training. There is nothing wrong with the safety designs of the Glocks. It's the owners who can't keep their fingers off the triggers.

My favorite story of a Glock is the officer who enter the washroom stall and then hung the Glock from the door hook like he had when he used a revolver. The mag was emptied and all 15 shoots discharged. Some of the rounds went through the ceiling and through the upper floor. It's funny because no one was hurt.

By safest gun I mean it doesn't fire unless you pull the trigger, and it will fire when you pull the trigger. A home intruder rushing you and you having to fumble with the safeties or some plastic bullet that has jammed your gun doesn't sound very safe to me. Safe for the criminal maybe.

At least a person who's an active and contributing member of the NRA can say that they are the NRA. It's a slogan but I supposed they had to put something in the advertisements.

The slogan that I don't care for is the group that claims to be a "No compromise" gun group. That's not only misleading. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Mike, the thing is, firearms aren't intended to be safe for everyone - they're intended to be dangerous and deadly for whatever you point them at and pull the trigger.

Will you accept liability if your product jams the gun of someone using it in a self-defense situation who is injured by their attacker as a result?
