'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

But I would never consider using Glasers as an all round defensive ammo. I'm sure they're great in the right application, airplanes, little apartments with thin walls, etc.

I wouldn't use it on the street in winter when the bad guys are bundled up in swearshirts and parkas.

Proving once again that 'safe' weapons and ammos are actually safer for bad guys.

Of course, they could make them to be almost indistinguishable from normal ammunition (at a glance, anyway)... then you'll get the rabid anti-gun nuts putting these rounds in with live ammo, and giggle with delight at all of the evil guns they just disabled (if only temproarily), and the gun nuts they just inconvenienced even further.

You awake Ralph pay attention now. Go put your gun in a safe, lock it up or use any safety device you can think of and I will put my Safety Bullet in my gun. Lets see who's gun is ready to use first.

No contest, Ralph mine is ready as fast as I can eject my SB. In the meantime your trying to find the key to unlock your gun lock or trying to wake up enough to remember the combination to your safe or you get the picture.

My SB is quick, easy, it works every time and its far faster than anything you have ever seen. If you don;t use a safety device than your asking for trouble.

By the way it does not hurt the gun in any way because the piece that locks the gun up is plastic. I checked it out and I had a gun smith check it out no problems of any kind.

Good Question!!

The pin that locks the safety Bullet in place will travel into the barrel of the revolver stopping the revolver from revolving, So the SB is locked in the firing chamber and the pic is locked in the SB and the revolver is kept from revolving.

Say you need to use the gun - point it down ( so the bullets will not fall out) trip the revolver locking mechanism until the bullets rotate out and turn the chamber once so that a new and lethal bullet will be aligned with the trigger. Your in business. THink that is to much. Ok put your gun in a safe, go find the key or punch in the code to unlock the safe in the dark, get the picture. Its the fastest thing on the market and it works.

How, precisely, does this thing lock itself into the chamber? I assume the overall description envisions a semi-automatic pistol, since revolvers would still have all the other chambers in the cylinder "open for business".

Morron!! You've been talking to my X wife haven't you? I had to use some kind of propellant a primer charge will more than do the job and its not enough to blow the thing up.

Ok put a dummy cartridge in and pull the trigger- nothing what do you do? You cycle the action and presto a new lethal cartridge is now in place and bang someone gets hurt. With the SB the gun would be locked - no one gets hurt- you don't get to go to jail - you don't get to pay an attorney to defend you for being charged with murder or carelessness. You don't get to go to your kids funeral becasue he shot himself with your gun

In a revolver it locks in the gun and stops the barrel from revolving. I thought of that also.

You got a better idea? I would love to see if. Those people that I have shown this to think its great. I have shown it to the NRA boys of which I am a member, The Local Police, State Police and Sherrifs office and they all think its the best thing they have every seen. When you see it you will to.

Thats how I was raised my father had a 348 lever action winchester we called the cannon! A mule had to carry the bullets they were so big!!

problem is people are still getting killed. Not just the stupid but cops, Army guys, name a group and they have been involved in accidental shooting. go to Yahoo and type in Accidental shooting. some 60,000 stories!!

THis bullet will put an end to that.

Swell. Just imagine trying to get the safety bullet out of the chamber in the dark right after waking up. Maybe you'd still be able to club the intruder to death with the now useless gun, or hope the dogs get him.
