'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

"unless its your kid that found your gun and he is pointing it at you daughter. That is what got me started in this an article about a four year old finding his grandfathers gun and killing his six year old sister with it. I am open to new ideas what do you have that will make a gun safe and stop kids from killing each other? Mike Worley Inventor of the Safety Bullet"

Teach kids from an early age that guns are dangerous weapons. Don't let your 4 year old play cops and robbers with your loaded .45.

Sometimes accidents happen. It's a fact of life. I understand some people are too immature to accept it, but this is the price you have to pay to live in a free society.

What if the combination doesn't work? What if the lock doesn't open? I remember that last time I left my gun in the glovebox. The glovebox wouldn't open. That's the last time I left my gun in my glovebox or any glovebox for that matter.

"What do you know of that is fast and safe and yet trouble free. I don't know of any other thing."

Not loading the gun is the safest thing I know of. But please, feel free to ignore this simple concept as much as is necessary to sell your product.

How did you know about this thread on FR?

Welcome and thanks for posting. This is an interesting idea if it will shut Sara Brady up...but I think we all know it won't.

Personally, I would never use this device. But, I don't have kids. If any are ever in my home (a real rarity), my guns would be locked up in my safe. When they are out, I want them locked and loaded....with real bullets.

Good luck, I am sure there are many gun owners who have kids that will want to try out your device.

Exactly. The only "safe gun" is my kids lime green clear squirt gun. Every heavy black or silver metal gun is DANGEROUS, period, all the time. No gizmo can make it otherwise.

Your 100 % correct.

Between the gang bangers and accidental shooting the anti gun crowd has lot of ammo to try and get our guns locked up. I don't own a hand gun because of all the screwey laws.

So its up to us to make our guns safer any way we can. If no one else died by accidental shooting that would be a great step in the right direction.

What do we do with the three and four year olds that are getting access to loaded guns and killing someone with them?

You don't even own a hand gun and you are promoting a gadget to make hand guns safer for those of us who already have figured out how to do it safely? What's up with that?

Isn't that like a desert nomad selling "safer igloo" designs to eskimos from his tent in the Sahara?

You I have got to meet. I want you to try one. Then slam it all you want. I think you'll agree it is one great idea. Everyone that I have shown it to has said that. If not dinner is on me.

Fair enough.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

A spent round casing can be used to the same effect. If the owner forgets the casing is in there, like when in the heat of adrenaline durng the assault of an intruder, he won't make his only defense totally useless. And he won't need no "special tool" either.

How do these crackpots get such press for their bonehead ideas?

Last year over 3,000 were killed by accidental shooting kids under 19 were 185 of them. A life lost is a life lost. 5 times that # were injured and did not die. Guys we have got to stop this. If you know of anyone that has a kid and a loaded gun lieing around show them a safety device. ANY safety device and bring them to someone that is teaching gun safety. Go to the CDC in Atlanta and pull up there info.

IF we all work together we can make firearms safe for everyone.

The answer has been given on this thread over and over. Education and training. I have five kids, my parents had four, and so on. We all followed that course and have nnot had a problem. I know hundreds of friends who are the same.

Like I said, if there ever is an accident in our home, that is exactly what it will be and we will find solace with our God the same as if lightning struck one of us.

In the mean time, my kids are well trained, all of their friends know the score and our firearms are available for use in the, God forbid, event we need them to protect our lives and/or proerty. I do not, and will not use any device that has any chance of limiting that. All of the safety devices I have seen have great potential to do just that ... ncluding this one IMHO. When truly needed, they are needed now.

You have every right to disagree and pursue a different course and I hope you do make a difference and save lives. In the mean time, I will preach my particular brand of addressing the issue (education and training) and the potential dangers of these other avenues ... just as you pursue your own.
