The one thing that would put the USPS in the black is charging .37¢ for each piece
of junk mail, that nobody wants anyway. That would either raise their ;revenue
tremendously or cut there expenses tremendously.

What? You mean there is not an alternative to first class mail now? Damn, and I thought the internet and computers would change everything. Too bad the USPS doesn't have a demorat President, Congress and Senate to work with. Then they could be charging us and our ISP's for everything we do.

LOL, don't worry. They have all the ideas on the shelf. They are just waiting until the demorats take total power, then initiate the new tax structure "in the name of national defense".

And guess what?

Nothing at all will happen. Chauffer driven cars will continue. Approval for outrageous expenses will continue. Waste, fraud and abuse will continue.

And in 18 months, we'll get another rate increase. Bet on it.

Lowering the rate to .37 cents as you suggest would sure be a boon to bulk mailers.

Raising the BBM rate to $.37 would eliminate USPS handling that portion of the mailstream.
You'd still get it delivered to your home, but the delevery would be by a private carrier.
The first classs postage rate would have to be raised enough to
cover it's entire cost, since it would no longer be supported by the bulk mail revenue.
60% of postal revenue is now generated by bulk business mail.

You can stop all bulk business mail from coming to your house.
Just take down your mailbox.

You can stop paying the higher postage rates by simply not mailing anything.
Pay your bills on line, or though auto deduction.

It lost $1.7 billion last year...

According to the Dallas Morning News, however, the Postal Service has committed $25 million to the team "for a three-year contract that expires in 2004."

Lance Armstrong has done more to offset the often negative (and often deserved) stereotype of the USPS, which is a 'quasi-independent' corporation. He probably wouldn't be complaining if they'd spent five times that on advertizing, which they probably do with less effect.

Why is everyone picking on Armstrong?

Anyway that is only $8.3 million per year. As for their loss, it's less than 1/200th of the total. They can find better places to cut.

To improve the Post Office, let's have Congress micromanage it.

I didn't read it as a slam against SUPERMAN Lance ... but a commentary on the WASTE in the USPS. They are actually riding Armstrong's coattails. &;-)

I never log on to FR without a bunch of reference materials at hand, for self-defense if nothing else.

The point the author doesn't make is that the USPS does its sponsorship of a sporting event that is in A FOREIGN COUNTRY!!!

How many Frenchmen use the USPS regularly?

I'd say a better USPS advertisement would be consistent on time delivery.
All the advertising in the world saying USPS is a great delvery service won't
convince anyone.
