When CNN dumped Major Garrett as a White House correspondent in May, one of the first calls he made was to Fox News Washington anchor Brit Hume. Smart move. Wednesday, Fox announced that Garrett, 39, will become a general assignment reporter in its Washington bureau in August.

I'm not real familiar with Garrett. Any input from Freepers on this one?

Major Garrett was on NET in the 90's. That was Paul Weyrich's network, on satellite. On NET, he talked about his family, and going to church. He was serious about his job, and a very nice guy. When I heard he went to CNN, I wondered how he would fit in, and how long he would be there, as he is/was conservative.

as frnewsjunkie says, on NET he was analytical, porfessional and conservative. His CNN tenure that I saw (I only watch it occasionally) seemed consistant with his NET tenure.

Major Garrett is great. Howlin, Callisto and I met him in Winston Salem when Bush came to North Carolina. Jim Angle referred to him as having come from more conservative roots than he did. Washington Times I think.

I emailed Roger Ailes to hire him when CNN made their big mistake.

I liked Major Garrett's reporting when he was with the Washington Times. Since I don't watch CNN, I can't comment on his work there. He'll be a fine addition to FOX.

He used to be with the Washington Times and is a reliable, fair minded conservative.

Oh, I remember Major Garrett. He was the nincompoop who came out right after Richard Reid's arrest, towing the DOT's party line on how Reid wasn't a terrorist and was acting alone. And he said all of this with a straight face and nary a quibble. I respect Brit Hume, but I think he had to be smokin' something when he made this hire.

Here's my take on Garrett: While he was at CNN, he tried to toe the anti-Bush line at first. He traveled with the President quite extensively and little by little, his reporting became more positive. By the end of his stay at the clinton news network, his reporting had become quite pro-Bush. I think he sincerely grew to admire and respect President Bush. A few months later, he was axed. I know I shouldn't be watching any CNN but I think it's important to know what the enemy is saying. He will be an asset to Fox.

I think you will both be surprised at Garrett. He was fired from CNN because he quit toeing the line.

I've always liked Major Garrett, always seemed like a straight shooter. I'm glad he's moved from CNN to FOXNews. But gee whiz, I hope this doesn't put the other Washington FOXNews reporters on notice. All of them are superb. I miss David Schuster, never did hear why Ailes fired him.

The fact that the guy was willing to work for CNN tells me more than I need to know.

I'm glad that I don't rely on your opinion.

Garrett was a great reporter when he worked for the Washington Times. He went to CNN because they were the first and only network to offer him a TV job. Apparently CNN thought that he didn't fit in so they fired him. It sure wasn't his reporting. It was his ideology.

You could ask him, but I'm afraid he's not in at the moment...

Major Garrett at Fox News. Good move by Hume/Ailes.

May be that explains why David Shuster is now with msnbc.
