I'm not real familiar with Garrett. Any input from Freepers on this one?

Major Garrett was on NET in the 90's. That was Paul Weyrich's network, on satellite. On NET, he talked about his family, and going to church. He was serious about his job, and a very nice guy. When I heard he went to CNN, I wondered how he would fit in, and how long he would be there, as he is/was conservative.

as frnewsjunkie says, on NET he was analytical, porfessional and conservative. His CNN tenure that I saw (I only watch it occasionally) seemed consistant with his NET tenure.

Major Garrett is great. Howlin, Callisto and I met him in Winston Salem when Bush came to North Carolina. Jim Angle referred to him as having come from more conservative roots than he did. Washington Times I think.

I emailed Roger Ailes to hire him when CNN made their big mistake.

I liked Major Garrett's reporting when he was with the Washington Times. Since I don't watch CNN, I can't comment on his work there. He'll be a fine addition to FOX.

He used to be with the Washington Times and is a reliable, fair minded conservative.

Oh, I remember Major Garrett. He was the nincompoop who came out right after Richard Reid's arrest, towing the DOT's party line on how Reid wasn't a terrorist and was acting alone. And he said all of this with a straight face and nary a quibble. I respect Brit Hume, but I think he had to be smokin' something when he made this hire.

Here's my take on Garrett: While he was at CNN, he tried to toe the anti-Bush line at first. He traveled with the President quite extensively and little by little, his reporting became more positive. By the end of his stay at the clinton news network, his reporting had become quite pro-Bush. I think he sincerely grew to admire and respect President Bush. A few months later, he was axed. I know I shouldn't be watching any CNN but I think it's important to know what the enemy is saying. He will be an asset to Fox.

Major Garrett at Fox News. Good move by Hume/Ailes.

May be that explains why David Shuster is now with msnbc.

I'm surprised it has taken this long for Garrett to turn up at FOX...CNN canned him because he's a conservative; simple as that.

Dismissal of CNN Reporter Shakes Bureau

By JIM RUTENBERG
The New York Times

The announcement last week that Major Garrett, the CNN White House correspondent, would be leaving the network came as a surprise to his colleagues in Washington. It also was a shock to Mr. Garrett - and the manner of his dismissal has roiled the bureau, CNN staff members said.

During his two and a half years at the network, executives never told Mr. Garrett they had a problem with him, people close to the situation said.

Last Monday, however, they bluntly told him that he had "no future" at CNN and that his services were no longer needed. CNN executives did not dispute this account.

The apparent harshness in the way the dismissal was handled sent a chill through the Washington offices of CNN, a subsidiary of AOL Time Warner.

It has also added to a sense of unease at the bureau that is growing as CNN executives continue to make changes. In the last year, the bureau has lost, either to buyout, dismissal or the competition: its longtime chief, Frank Sesno, and its two legal analysts, Roger Cossack and Greta Van Susteren. Its veteran anchor, Bernard Shaw, retired. Meanwhile, the role of Bill Press, the longtime Democrat on "Crossfire," came to an end last month when he was replaced with two Democratic consultants Paul Begala and James Carville. "There is huge uncertainty which hangs over everybody - camera people, producers, directors, reporters and anchors," said another person on the CNN Washington staff. A representative for Mr. Garrett, Robert Barnett, a Washington lawyer, had no comment.

CNN executives said the dissatisfaction among those on the Washington staff was regrettable, but perhaps to be expected. Mr. Garrett's departure, they said, was just one of the changes at CNN since the completion of the merger of its former parent company, Time Warner, and America Online last year.

The new CNN management - led by Jamie Kellner, the Turner Broadcasting System chief executive, and Walter Isaacson, the CNN chairman - was said to question whether Mr. Garrett had the breakout quality the network was seeking.

"The whole strategy is to keep our programming focused on our top correspondents," said an executive at CNN. The executive added that the network was being a lot more selective about whom it puts on the screen and was "really trying to draw out the top anchors like Jonathan Karl or John King or Kate Snow or Kelly Wallace" - the Washington correspondents currently in favor. Mr. Garrett is being replaced with Suzanne Malveaux, a former NBC News correspondent.

That's another one of those sort of names. Two of my cousins, they're brothers, have a middle name in common: "Marshall"! Also, there is a "Sargent Shriver"; Maria Shriver's dad. But I don't know if his is spelled like the military rank: "Sergeant"(sp?).

Good move by Roger! No wonder that man has taken his network to the top of the heap. Even though I don't like Greta I understand that it was a good business move. I just tune her out.

I remeber Garrett from impeachment days on Hardball and other screaming head shows. He always impressed me as level headed and practical. I felt he might be a conservative...but he never came out and said so.

Good pick! I think Garret and Hume attend the same Pray Group. But I have to wonder how the current Fox White House reporters are going to take the comp? Or is someone being replaced?

I noticed this week while channel-surfing that David Schuster, formerly of FoxNews, is now on MSNBC. I always liked his reporting and was sorry that Fox lost him. Perhaps Garrett is a replacement since Schuster's beat seemed to be the WH and Capitol Hill.
