USO Canteen FReeper Style....Childrens Art to our Troops....July 23,2002
FRiends of the USO Canteen FReeper Style and Snow Bunny

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family, friend of the family, neighbor, who served their country, take a brief moment of your day to thank them. Thank them for the sacrifice they made for the better good of their country.
We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper Style, are thankful for every service member in our military, who has served our great nation.
So, to the men and women who answered the call, in both times of war and peace, thank you.
.
Message from Snow Bunny to all those who visit the Canteen.
This is how I think of the USO Canteen Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road, a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.
Since it opened, it is magical how so many Freepers who post here, feel it too. It has been so dear how the Freepers kept making it a cottage - a home-type of place that had a huge living room for them to visit in and a dance floor, a library, etc.
Many Veterans have written to me, saying that the Canteen is like home to them for the first time since they served.
This is your Canteen - a respite from our busy and sometimes troubling world. Make yourself at home.

Hey, Misty! I just thought that I would let you know that I'm a little bit hungry. (but I don't like bananas - *giggle)
To: MistyCA
Hi Misty, that has to be so frustrating for you. You do these things so good Misty. Laughing and handling it so good. I really am proud of you. Your mom would not want to be like this, so for you to handle it like you are is so wonderful. Your very special Misty.

I suppose I am perplexed by just what kind of virtual-edifice complex is going on here. (Seeing, on this go-round, an 8th-grade kid asking a soldier to "kill Osama bin Laden for me" -- the loss of innocence is the dismaying cherry on the cake, really.) Just think, if in the next 4 years, some GI comes through and knocks off Osama, then the 8th grader won't have to become a light weapons infantryman right out of high school. That'll be the class of 2006, for anyone keeping track.

Looks like Ladies' Night in the Canteen...
Hope everyone is having a great night.
The thread is wonderful today, SB. I'm still visiting with my relatives and can't visit the Canteen too often. The childrens' artwork is precious and so meaningful. I just know our troops will love it! Your reply to Greybird was perfect. I was going to do a private reply and explain what the Canteen means to me, but I won't bother. Sorry to bring up an unpleasant subject on this lovely evening.
Kathy, thanks so much for the bear! It's adorable! I look forward to getting to know you better, as I've been unable to hang out at the Canteen as much as I'd like lately.
Nan, Sassy, souris, Blues....wonderful to see you, FRiends! ((((((((HUGS))))))))
Thanks for the song, Jen. You're a special FRiend to me!
Spookie, I miss you! Feel better soon! Prayers on the way...
Love, GG

WEll, now you have gone and done it...Don Williams is my all time favorite country singer...no one else has a voice like him....smooth, deep, dreamy...and he seems like just a quiet, sweet man...I think he has been nicknamed, 'The Gentle Giant'
When we were living near Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, Don Williams held at concert at the Cumberland County Arena...I would have loved to have gone, but my husband had not been in the military all that long, and we had a mortgage, and two small boys, and even just one ticket for me to go to the Don Williams concert, would have been too frivolous, when one is trying to care for children...
So I just had to content myself, with listeing to my Don Williams 'records'(yep, the big vinyl jobs)....this was in the late 70s....
But the next day, I read a review of the show...it was a glowing report, sayint that it was SRO, and that the whole crowd was mesmerized by Don Williams...
At the end of the show, Don Williams sang 'Amanda', which he made famous, before Waylon Jennings rerecorded it...the newspaper report, said that the audience was swaying, and at the end of the song, a very enthusiastic fan hollered out, "Eat your heart out, Waylon"(not meaning to demean Waylon here, but 'Amanda' is Don Williams song)
My favorite Don Williams song is one that seems to be hard to get, and one that I do not really remember being played on the radio much...still its my favorite one...its 'Gypsy Woman'
Kudos to you COB1, for bringing Don Williams to this thread, and providing his music...You have made one Freeper, exceedingly happy today...

Hi Misty, good to see you! Sounds like you do indeed need and deserve a break tonight. Love, GG
To: souris
I don't have a doll. I've not mastered the art. You can use the pic from my profile page. SAM has the whole body picture and he uses it quite frequently to blackmail me.

I'm coming. Count me in. I'll bring the quarters and 4TheFlag can bring the beer.
I love you guys so much. I miss you terribly. I just can't sit here right now. I had a great morning, a terrible afternoon and now I feel a lot better. I just don't want to push it.
To the troops....((((((Hooches and Smugs)))))) I love you guys so much. Not a moment goes by in our day where we are not thinking about you or talking about you. I'm always praying for your safety. Please be careful. Hurry home to us. God bless you and your loved ones back home.

Goodnight and happy software loading. And I sure am glad you nudged Cobbie into finding such a good country musician to go with all the other music we have at the Canteen.
