WorldCom - Summary of political contributions over the past several years
OpenSecrets.org ^ | Unknown

Months after the collapse of Enron, President Bush, members of Congress and the Justice Department are again on the trail of what looks to be one of the biggest cases of fraudulent accounting practices yet. On June 25, WorldCom, the nation’s second largest long-distance carrier, announced that it had overstated its cash flow by nearly $4 billion during the last two years, sending its stock into a virtual freefall and leaving the company on the brink of bankruptcy.

How did it happen? That’s what Congress wants to know, especially during an election year. With voters already disgruntled after what seems to be months of continuous corporate scandal, Democrats are hoping to use the issue of corporate mistrust to unseat Republicans this Election Day.  One avenue they will likely use: campaign contributions from the embattled companies to the GOP. “All you have to do is follow the money,” House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt (D-Mo.) told reporters June 26. “It leads right to the Republican party.”

But that argument might not be as convincing in WorldCom’s case. Over the last 10 years, the company’s political contributions have been spread evenly between the two national parties. Since 1989, the company has contributed roughly $7.6 million in soft money, PAC and individual contributions to federal candidates and parties, 54 percent to the GOP. The race for WorldCom money has been even tighter than during the current election cycle. So far in 2001-02, WorldCom has contributed just over $1 million, split equally between Democrats and Republicans.   CONTINUE ...

Having a family member (spouse) an employee of WCOM and having been the recipient of various MCI and then, later WCOM PAC mailings for contributions, I can assure you that they have a much longer track record of greasing the skids of BOTH political parties.

The percentages have changed somewhat over time, but their main focus was always to funnel money to members sympathetic to legislation which benefitted them. Plus, funneling money to those on the fence.

It's long been my conviction that (a) Mr. John McCain (Mr. CFR) is at or near the top of many of these kinds of companies' contribution lists, and (b) Those members sitting on the fence do so looking for a reason (money) to vote a certain way. When the money comes, it's amazing how it changes a point of view.

Whoa! Those Worldcom folks sure believed in greasing the skids, didn't they?

In the Mafia, this is known as "protection money".

This only further goes to show it is not a question of getting money out of politics to clean it up. It is a question of getting power out of the hands of politicians to clean it up.

When that happens, nobody will bother giving politicians money (except maybe Mom and Uncle Fred). Then businesses can get on with protecting their stockholders and careers by beating the competition with service and better products rather than beating them by buying strategically placed politicians.

"These many." -- John Sidgmore, the chief executive of WorldCom, in response to the question, "How many millions did you personally pocket before announcing the bankrupty of your company?"
