"IRAN MUST STRIKE AT THE HEART OF THE UNITED STATES": RAFSANJANI

TEHRAN 17 July (IPS) One of Iran’s most powerful officials menaced Wednesday the United States of terrorist attack in its "very heartland".

***"The Islamic Republic must get ready for confrontation against the enemy’s attack by answering its offensive right in its heartland", Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani told the hard line "Jomhoori Eslami" (Islamic Republic) newspaper, which belongs to Ayatollah Ali Khameneh'i.

It was the second time in as many days that the Chairman of the Expediency Council was attacking the recent statement by President George W. Bush, inviting Tehran to abandon its "destructive and belligerent policy".

Informed Iranian political analysts said considering the position of the former president, who is also considered as the closest aid, friend and adviser of Ayatollah Ali Khameneh'i, the lamed leader of the Islamic regime, his threats must be taken "very seriously".

"Mr. Hashemi Rafsanmjani’s declaration is very dangerous, for it might provoke the United States to launch a military attack on Iran, at a time that Washington considers regimes such as those of Iran and Iraq a threat for its own, and the world’s security", commented Mr. Ali Keshtgar, the Editor of the Paris-based monthly "Mihan".

Mr. Hashemi Rafsanjani termed as "impudent and insolent" President Bush’s 12 July statement in which he openly expressed support for Iranian "elected officials" and reformers against the "non-elected ones who continue to stick to power", a clear reference to Ayatollah Khameneh'i and the conservatives he led.

"The importance of Mr. Bush’s statement is that not only he rejects any secret or open deals and relations with the authoritarian wing of the leadership represented by the Khameneh'i-Rafsanjani couple, but also for the first time in the past 50 years, the United States overtly backs the Iranian people’s aspirations and demands for democracy and freedom. Contrary to the conservative’s accusations and outcries, this is not an interference in Iranian domestic affairs", he told the Persian service of Radio France Internationale.

Ayatollah Khameneh’i also attacked President Bush, whom he accused of "sowing discord and division" between top Iranian officials.

"Having understood nothing and not realising how much the Iranian people hates America, the impudent, opportunist, hated and insolent American president continue to repeat same old mistakes, but he was slapped in the mouth by our respected president", the unpopular Khameneh'i told Education Ministry officials.

"US president's latest remarks are a lesson for the Iranian nation to see how the enemies are seeking to sow seeds of division among our officials, saying they accept one segment and do not accept another. This also is a lie, for they do not accept anyone", he said in an angry and chocked tone.

***Analysts said what has angered much Mr. Khameneh'i is that some Iranian reformers have actually supported President Bush’s last statement.

"Today, Iran is not the only place where the US flag is being set ablaze and the slogan of death to America is a pivotal principle of the nation", he added, quoted by the official news agency IRNA, promising a big anti-American show on Friday.

Nationwide rally will be held on Friday to denounce the US president's interventionist statements about Iran, IRNA confirmed.

The United States has accused Iran of sponsoring international terrorism, seeking to acquire weapons of mass destruction and sheltering Taleban and al-Qa’eda fighters fleeing neighbouring Afghanistan -- all charges Iran strongly denies.

In his diatribe, Mr. Khameneh'i did not spare the Islamic Iran Participation Party (IIPP), saying some "narrow minded people" were after the creation of a "single party rule".

The harsh remarks coincided with the start the third Congress of IIPP, which is Iran's largest pro-reform political organisation and is led by Dr Mohammad Reza Khatami, the younger brother of the embattled and powerless President.

In his opening address, Dr Khatami, who is also the Majles’ first Deputy Speaker, launched a strong attack on the country's ruling conservatives, warning against the "return of despotism and dictatorship" if changes are not allowed to succeed.

Mr. Khatami accused the conservatives of trying to kill the reform process, and forecast the collapse of the Islamic regime if nothing is done to calm public fears.

"If the reforms don't bear fruit, it will lead to a return and re-establishment of despotism and a dictatorship" in Iran, the IIPP’s General Secretary told the packed audience, at which were present the leaders of several pro-reform parties and groups.

"How can we face the world when our Judiciary let terrorists walking freely in the streets but place thinkers, journalists and intellectuals in prison because of their believes", he pointed out.

Khatami accused the conservatives, whose control of the courts and other levers of power hamper the work of the pro-reform parliament and the government, of "resorting to all political and institutional means" to bring the "reform process to failure."

"The conservatives are utilising state bodies for partisan aims and to widen the gap between the people and the regime," he said. They were "knowingly or unknowingly looking to create tension" in the political landscape.

He expressed concern over the future of the regime, warning that totalitarian governments were bound to collapse. "Iran is not an exception to that principle", he added.

He described the present situation as "chaotic" and "critical", and observed that political, social and economic crises have led to very serious concerns among the population.

"If nothing is done, the regime will face the threat of collapse", he warned.

"The crisis is present and it is growing with every day. That is why the people have lost their confidence in the regime", Khatami further added.

A total of 290 delegates were attending the three-day meeting, which began Wednesday to define a "plan for action" for future elections in the remaining three years of President Khatami's second and last tenure.

The Party, which serves as an organ for the President, came under an unprecedented attack Tuesday after a moderate conservative daily accused it to prepare a "subversive plan of action" for retain power "once the clergy is finished". ENDS BUSH KHAMENEH'I 17702

Very well said!

I agree that the word "heartland" was used with purpose, and I also agree with TLBShow that "heartland" can be equated with "food".

The use of the word "heartland" is extremely disturbing since you would think that the natural targets for terror would be the parasite centers (cities), where the population is dense. Maybe they figured out that bombing our parasite centers would ultimately have a beneficial effect for the United States, in the long run.

The first word in "fuel cell" is fuel. They require a source of fuel. If it is based on pure H2 technology then one needs a source of H2

See article about geneticly-engineered algae that give off hydrogen. Take an algae pond, put transparent cover over it, extract hydrogen. Use excess algae as fish food in adjoining fish farm ponds

The heat index today is 105.

Holy moly, it is about 59 here, northeast of San Francisco. I am thinking, sooner or later, we are going to have it out with these scum bags.

I am also very hopeful about Iran. For one thing they are not Arabs--they are Persian--so they feel no immediate solidarity with the Arab regimes that surround them. Also the young people in Iran have been demonstrating against the oppressive government quite openly. I saw a recent documentary about Iran and the young generation are very modern--almost European--in their dress and manners. Nearly half ot the college students in the country are female--girls and guys can date who they want-the women wear moderate head scarves not veils--and they have a tremendous amount of national pride in their modernity. Also many Iranians have satellite dishes and they get news from around the world so their have much more access to information than your average Muslim living under a Wahabi regime. BTW they came out in large numbers to hold a pro American rally after 9/11.

Alright, hear me out. It seems that nearly 1/2 of the population of the Country resides in the blue zones, the majority of which are along coastal areas and up the Missisippi River and Ohio River valleys.

That leaves the other half scattered over thousands of miles of boondocks and "heatland cities", many of which a lot of blue zoners could never even find on a map. Supposed 9/11 had happened in Fargo, Boise or El Paso, would the outcry have been the same?

Had a connection between the OKC bombing and ME terrorists been established in the media and in the Gov't, would there have been the same outcome in terms of militarization (put aside the X42 factor) of forces?

My point is this. IMO, a great portion of blue zoners don't give a damn about fly-over country and would marginalize in their minds, any attacks there, and not give as wholehearted support for a war on terror as they do because it (9/11) happened in the heart of their "land"

From a purely logistical standpoint we should go after both Iran and Iraq at the same time. The close proximity of the two will allow full mobilization and marshalling of forces from within both countries leaving the rats no safe haven in the Persian Gulf area. That should do a lot to quiet the chanting of our demise. The Iron is White Hot so... Strike!!

We can not stop them from hating us, but we can take away their source of financing.

Al Qeada's primary financing came from honey, heroin, the stock market, counterfeiting, hostage-taking (the number one source of terrorist funding worldwide, a close match with drug money for top place), charities, the hawala system, and a multitude of schemes carried out by its operatives involving everything from check kiting to forgery.

The PLO, on the other hand, gets a lot of money from oil since the oil producing states would rather have the palestinians in Israel's hair than in theirs.

Oil is a minor part of the problem when it comes to the funding of terrorism- but it is a HUGE part fo the problem in that it twists the way oil-dependent nations deal with countries in the middle east. Instead of acting forcefully when people mess with us, we have to worry about the 'feelings' of those nearby nations which have a say in how much oil the US or its trading partners can buy. We wouldn't have to worry about any country's 'feelings' if our people were not worried about the occasional oil crunch, becuase it is the American politicians' need please the constituency on economics that makes them so sensitive to the oil market- not the oil itself. All politics IS local. Americans think only of their wallets and purses, but are too stupid to realize that the taxes made neccessary by the American desire for economic 'security' and a safety net have a bigger adverse effect on our wallets and national economic success than the price of oil ever could.

heartland=food

even more importantly...

heartland=our best baseball towns

heartland=the country's soul and oasis of common sense in an otherwise pusswhipped country.

But look at it this way- hitting the heartland would be the absolute worst thing a country like Iran could ever do. That's the one place where people won't weep and ask "why do they hate us?" It is the one part of the country that could cheerfully vote to nuke an entire country and then go barbeque a mess of pork steaks, boil up a pot of sweetcorn, ice down some beer, sit down and enjoy the show, and then get up the next morning to go to work, without shedding a single tear.

Americans think only of their wallets and purses...

Thank you for the additional information. What ever the source of their money, we need to where possible stop it, or at least slow it down. It will not be easy, but it is not impossible.

I do think your statement that "Americans think only of their wallets.." is a little much. Certainly some are only concern with what it will cost them, but not all. And certainly the men and women on the front lines today who put their life on the line are not thinking only of their wallets. When the crunch comes, the American people will be willing to pay the price to put an end to these terroist thugs.

As for why they hate us, I don't care. Let them hate me as much as they want, but when they turn their hate into action and American citizens begin to die, I want them to pay a very heavy price even if it means more taxes.
