Junk Science and the New American Myths

The junk scientists, for reasons which headshrinkers or the FBI might look into, have been doing a scam job on America's people and government, all damaging to the national welfare. Along with the envirocrats, the educrats and the propaganda end of the medical profession, they work night and day, aided and abetted by the liberal media, to shut down economic activity and return us to the spinning wheel. Their tools are junk ecology, phony studies, the power-trippers at the Environmental Protection Agency and a Rousseau-like preference for nature over humanity. Here are a few of the hundreds of documented examples.

Global warming. The myth continues to be propagated by envirocrats and the media, pushing for the Kyoto treaty that further would slow the U.S. economy and put literally millions out of work. Yet the very people screaming about it now once were singing a completely different tune. In 1975, Newsweek reported in "The Cooling World" that scientists were predicting a new ice age:

"The evidence in support of [global cooling] has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologists are hard-pressed to keep up with it. ? A survey completed last year by Dr. Murray Mitchell of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reveals a drop in average ground temperature in the Northern Hemisphere between 1945 and 1968. According to George Kukla of Columbia University, satellite photos indicated a sudden large increase in Northern Hemisphere snow cover in the winter of 1971-72. ? Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change. The longer the planners delay, the more difficult they will find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality."

Interestingly, the solution advocated by the "new ice age" scientists was to discontinue the use of coal, oil and natural gas ? exactly what their junk-science successors now are calling for to cope with "global warming." Of course, "global cooling" was as silly as "global warming."

DDT. Most people have forgotten the hysterical campaign to make DDT illegal. Offering no more evidence than their own fright wigs and Pinocchio noses, the junk scientists and their envirocrat allies mounted a campaign to declare DDT a noxious substance which, upon entering the ecosystem, would poison our cattle and every meat- and vegetable-eater. In all the hullabaloo to make DDT illegal, not one case of its alleged ill effects was produced, but the rhetoric rolled like thunder.

Not only was the use of DDT made illegal in the United States, but its export was forbidden. And who suffered? There were areas of India in which malaria had decimated populations and made useless their otherwise productive land. DDT salvaged those lands and their malaria-stunted peoples; no DDT and they began dying again.

Now we have learned that in sub-Saharan Africa millions of malarial deaths could have been prevented by the use of DDT, and the need grows greater every year. Do you hear the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People charging that junk scientists are responsible for this slaughter of black Africans? So far, only the anopheles mosquito is ahead.

Carbon dioxide. Cuckooland junk scientists have talked the California Legislature into enacting a bill to "control" carbon dioxide in automobile exhausts ? a polite form of energy rationing and a sure way to increase deaths on the highway by forcing the use of lighter, more dangerous cars.

Carbon-dioxide production is a natural process, and what man creates today is responsible for about 2.5 percent of it. Even if "global warming" were a fact, it would not be affected by man. If every factory were shut down, every car garaged and we all stopped breathing, it would have little or no effect on the so-called "greenhouse" in which fauna and flora live.

Obesity. The junk scientists, aided and abetted by the media, and especially the New England Journal of Medicine, are trumpeting that obesity kills some 300,000 Americans a year. This derives from a study that says just the opposite, ascribing the mortality figure to physical inactivity, risky weight-loss processes and poor diet.

Moderately active fat people have far lower mortality rates than do thin sedentary people, and the same death rates as thin active people. Alarm about fat as a risk factor in popular foods is junk medical propaganda and an excuse to loot and control the fast-food industry.

Forest fires. If the junk scientists and the envirocrats have their way, most of America's trees ? and there are more growing here today than in the early 18th century ? will go the way of the more than 8.4 million acres of forest devastated in 2000. Until Clintonite tree-huggers, envirocrats and junk scientists took over, selective logging helped pay for the upkeep of federal forest land and kept it healthy: staff, forestry stations, roads and cleanup.

Since then "environmental" regulations and the cutback by the Clintonites of 80 percent of selective logging have turned forest lands into disaster areas. According to the General Accounting Office, taxpayers will have to spend $12 million just to clear away fire-spreading deadwood, or what is left of it after the wildfires in Colorado and Arizona. Today, according to the U.S. Forest Service, 73 million acres of the 192 million acres it administers are in peril of raging forest fires. Tens of millions of acres are dead or dying.

All thanks to envirocrats and junk science.

The call on DDT was largely based on info provided by the late Dr. George Craig, an entomologist. He was a true scientist, who when he made his recommendation to the US gov't to end the use of DDT in the States, knew that his decision could have worldwide consequences. He feared the scenario you mentioned- disease in the 3rd world BUT those countries, who do not have the ability to carry out their own studies could have continued to make or use the chemical. They chose not to based upon our decision to not use it here. It was their choice. They follow our lead whether we like it or not. Our lack of production does not mean that DDT could not be made or used elsewhere.

Regarding the forest fires: there's one thing I don't understand... How come Bush won't sign an executive order making clear cutting the policy? Isn't anyone a wee bit curious? And how come people aren't calling for this executive order?

(If they are, I haven't heard it.)
