The call on DDT was largely based on info provided by the late Dr. George Craig, an entomologist. He was a true scientist, who when he made his recommendation to the US gov't to end the use of DDT in the States, knew that his decision could have worldwide consequences. He feared the scenario you mentioned- disease in the 3rd world BUT those countries, who do not have the ability to carry out their own studies could have continued to make or use the chemical. They chose not to based upon our decision to not use it here. It was their choice. They follow our lead whether we like it or not. Our lack of production does not mean that DDT could not be made or used elsewhere.

Regarding the forest fires: there's one thing I don't understand... How come Bush won't sign an executive order making clear cutting the policy? Isn't anyone a wee bit curious? And how come people aren't calling for this executive order?
