"Why aren't they releasing the name of the victim?"

No idea...I'm still trying to figure out how a pipe bomb automatically rules out the possibility of terrorists. Sure, it could have been the victim's bomb...or this could be a hit, unrelated in any way to terrorism.....but it IS too soon to tell.

I agree. I dislike the (general) news silence on this. Doesn't feel right. Gut reaction, and my gut's known to be off more than once (ask my roommate), but still...

Victim now in hospital being operated on.

Most of Wisconsin now opened. Just one lane blocked south of Western. WMAL reporter could get near scene of explosion, on Wisconsin and Ingomar.

You're asking for an awful lot of concern.

You two are completely missing my point. It's totally irrelevant that there are lots of small earthquakes in California. There are lots of hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods in other parts of the country. Many of these areas are heavily populated too.

Lots of FReepers delight in the thought of California falling into the ocean as a result of an earthquake. Four and a half million Californians voted for Bush in the last presidential election. That's more people than even live in a lot of states in this wonderful country of ours. What I am saying is, Californians aren't all made from the same mold. There are a lot of good conservative people living here, especially in the Central Valley. Some people want California to disappear, giving no thought to the well being of those millions of us who are good decent people. < /rant>

DC Police Chief Ramsey said the victim was visiting someone and had exchanged vehicles with them. Talk about bad luck! I hope the DC Police will investigate the vehicle owner, etc.

Explosion in Washington garage believed to be pipe bomb, but not terrorism

(07-12) 13:56 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --  An explosion Friday in a city parking garage appeared to be caused by a pipe bomb but was not believed to be an act of terrorism, police said.

A 21-year-old man who apparently was trying to start a car was injured and taken to a hospital, the police said.

"We don't know a motive. It does not appear to have any relationship to terrorism," said Charles H. Ramsey, chief of the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department.

"It definitely has remnants of what we believe was a pipe bomb of some kind," Ramsey said. "We don't know how it was detonated."

Evacuations were ordered within a two-mile radius, including a shopping mall, offices and numerous restaurants along Wisconsin Avenue in Northwest Washington near the Maryland border. The explosion was about five miles from the White House.

Ramsey said the victim was visiting someone in the area and arranged to borrow that person's car.

"He just may have been a person who happened to take the wrong car at the wrong time," Ramsey said. The chief said other evidence recovered made the incident "appear to be more of a personal type of thing."

...Me too, but the DC police isn't exactly known for it's effeciency. They'll do as good a job investigating this as they did finding Chandra Levy.

The same Charles Ramsey who couldn't find any donuts while searching the area where Chandra Levy's body was found but managed to overlook some interesting bones? That Charles Ramsey?

Murder Rate Skyrockets in DC
Posted - July 11, 2002 8:45am Posted By: Tracy Stokes
WJLA.com – Seven News; Washington, DC

Washington - You're about to see more police patrolling the streets of Washington, because crime scene tape is going up more and more, as the murder rate skyrockets.

The numbers are disturbing. This time last year, 90 people had been murdered. So far this year, 117 murders have occurred in the District, an increase of 30 percent.

The nation's capital is also setting new records for unsolved murders -- last year fewer homicides were solved in Washington than any time in the past decade.

To combat the increased violence, next week DC Police Chief Charles Ramsey plans to put 100 more cops on the street; moving officers currently working desk jobs to the streets in some of Washington's most crime ridden neighborhoods.

While some residents say they'd welcome more officers in their neighborhoods, others are concerned that more police may simply lead to more harassment, and some officials say simply putting more officers on the street will not solve Washington's growing problem with gang-related murders.

ABC 7 did some checking on the murder rates in other jurisdictions.

-In Prince George's County, there were 56 homicides this time last year. That's jumped to 63 this year.

-Montgomery County counts seven murders at this time last year, and 12 this year.

-In Arlington last year had one, this year, there have been four.

-In Alexandria this time last year, the number was three. So far this year there have been two.

Prince William County does not have numbers available.

Well, they did find the building, so they're off to a good start.
Chris Gordon, NEWS4, reported the SUV to be a Chevy Blazer, maybe.

I can't tell you how much your weekly support means to us, Cake_crumb!

Well, I am on my way out the door to stand on opposing corners from Fresno's peaceniks once again. I never thought they would continue to turn out each week, especially once it got so hot (it's 105 degrees here today), but they are a persistant bunch. So are we though. Hehehe!

**sigh** Now I will probably be made fun of for living where it's so hot.
