How did I end up on so MANY *ping* lists? [VANITY]

Every morning I turn on my computer and head for FreeRepublic. Until recently, I might find an email or two, and perhaps a comment that came in after I had turned of the computer for the night.
Now, when I see the MY COMMENTS highlighted, I am amazed to find a dozen or more new articles which have been sent to me via *ping* lists. I know of only two lists to which I requested to to be added, but now it seems I am on fifteen or twenty. And most of them are topics that are not really something I'm fired up over, it seems I just "happened" to have made some comment on some thread, and *voila`* I'm on a *ping* list.
I don't want anyone to think I'm whining, it's just that this is starting to look like SPAM to me. Today alone, I have to write to four more of these lists to request removal. It seems like I have to write these requests every day now.
Is this bugging anyone else, or am I the only curmdgeon in these here parts?

Wait a minute, I didn't even realize you had an actual ping list. I thought you operated on a strictly ad hoc basis. Who knew you were organized?!
Please continue to ping me or face my wrath.

Well I got tired of typing in the names. I'm still working on my Mega-Spam-Make-JohnHuang2-Cry-Ultimate List (working name) with over 7,000 names.

I like the NC ping list, but it is the only list I want to be pinged about...
The other thing I really like about the new FR, is that under my breaking news, I have NC news so I can check those quickly during the day

Why thank you jern!
I just don't want to pester anyone.
BTW, I also like the "Review" feature where you can check the thread titles at a glance.
Hope you have a good weekend.

CD and Billie ~~~ I definitely do want to stay on your ping lists ..... I may not always respond on a thread but I usually do read them.

At one point I was on six/seven ping lists.
I wrote to the 'pingers' and politely asked off their list. It worked.

Thanks for the heads up -- I started my ping list for the specific purposes of alerting people who I met here who had similar interests as mine (i.e., those who are looking for info of interest or about black conservatives). I've specifically noted on my ping that if you want on or off my list to please let me know.I'm pretty sensitive to spam in general, and the last thing that I would do is to intentonally spam someone. Not only that, I do honor remove requests as soon as I possibly can; I maintain my list on both my work and home machines, and try to keep them in sync.
That being said, I have to also add that I do not add people indiscriminately; only after they have requested that they be added.
I'm looking forward to any sort of additional management mechanism that would help everyone as far as that is concerned.
And yes, I'm back from my "northern sojourn" of a vacation, and yes, I'm very tired...[g]

Wow! How did you find this old thread ? !
For a while the "pingists" backed off. Now I'm on a dozen or so new ones. Maybe this thread needs to be reposted to remind people to control themselves. I keep getting pinged to threads about Ithaca NY. I have NO IDEA why! I have no interest or connection to Ithaca NY. LOL!
To: EggsAckley
Someone had started a thread today asking for the best threads of 2002. I think it was Arthur McGowan who first asked to "not be pinged" a couple of years ago and that ended up being a classic thread.
Some seem to start these ping lists for their own egos and get all excited when their threads hit 100 or more posts. It takes all types, I guess.
Ithaca is in a beautiful part of NY State, but I'd rather drive there than be pinged to it.

Have I pinged you?
To: Ernest_at_the_Beach
I don't know if you have or not. But since you post a lot of California related articles, THAT I'm interested in.
To: EggsAckley
Well, I don't think I have you on the Calgov2002 list,,, but i could add you... hehehehe!

I keep getting pinged to acticles about Florida!! I've never been to Florida, don't plan to ever go to Florida and usually don't care what happens in Florida.
I don't know the person who pings me to these threads and have no clue how I got on anyone's ping list. I've never asked to be included on any ping list!
To: jellybean
To the best of my recollection, the only ping list I asked to be on is the Astronomy daily thread. I like the pretty pictures. ;o) I think people just see who is commenting on a specific topic, and add them to their list. I do wish Jim could do something to stop this.
