I hope we don't lose any of them. Particularly those like Tillman, who have the brightest of futures ahead of them.

Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. God still inspires us to do what is right, lead lives of selflessness, despite or perhaps, because of the wrongs done to our neighbors or families or friends. May God continue to bless America, the home of the free and the brave......because of men with character, like Tillman. Great post, pokey.

Tillman's a hero. Where else would he be but with our other heroes?

Bob Kalsu, the only NFL player to die in Vietnam. Rest in peace Bob.

'Yeah--but we get to get shot at!' and raised their beer bottles. No resentment. No anger. Just pure . . . testosterone-laden bravado." Pure unadulterated Peggy Noonan. Another great article.

I've always thought that the word "hero" being applied to athletes cheapend the word. It's pretty pathetic when Tiger Woods is dubbed "courageous" for going for the green in two on a really long par-5, or a team is lionized for demonstrating "real character" in playing a game (which, after all, is their job), or a guy who crashes a car after driving around and around in circles attains legendary status, while men like Pat Tillman, those mentioned by Peggy Noonan and thousands of others who wear the uniform of our armed forces have become invisible and irrelevant to so many Americans.

Pure unadulterated Peggy Noonan. Another great article. Amazing the story she is able to tell with one sentence...I can see it just as if I was standing there...
This piece deserves to be BUMPED.

"his conscience would not allow him to tackle opposition fullbacks where there is still a bigger enemy that needs to be stopped in its tracks." 'Nuff said.

Some very talented young men, and women, are joining the armed forces in order to help their country because, apparently, they love it. After what our society and culture have been through and become the past 30 years or so, you wouldn't be sure that we would still be making their kind, but we are. As the Mom of one of those 'very talented young men' who love their country and are sacrificing freedom and self to serve, I thank Peggy Noonan for this article!
There are many of 'their kind' in this country. We just forgot to notice them.
