I don't hate Bush because I realize the futility of expectations. To me Dems and Repubs are opposing teams playing the same game, and the rules don't respect the Constitution. Pessimism tells me this will not change, and I can never hope to see the three branches functioning as intended in my lifetime. Even if my vote could secure the executive branch, congress and the judiciary would prevent Constitutional law.

I fully plan on voting for Bush should he decide to run again in 2004. He has EARNED my respect.

There seems to be a lot of people who rush to judgement on him, but I'm a very patient person. I think there is a LOT going on behind the scenes. Oh, I know, there are plenty of people here who think they should know everything that is going on, but we're in the middle of a war. That makes things a little different. Our lives, and the lives of our families are at stake and we have to make a decision on whether we trust the man and his administration. I've made my decision. I'll trust the man.

I voted for him and would vote again in the next round but would put myself under the (1) not conservative enough (mostly for his passing too many of the libs reforms) and (8)too soft on immigration.

I realize the strategy to deny the dems their "key" issues but I was hoping for "our side" to run the ball forward offense for awhile rather than give up only a few yards on defense.

Are my expectations unrealistic? Possibly, but these still reflect my position.

Off topic, but

has anyone in Oklahoma heard any news of the supposed UFO crash near Henrietta Oklahoma tonight? Heard on the radio coming home that it was cylyndrical and the ground shook for 30 seconds.

Well, I certainly don't hate him. In fact, I like him as a person more than any president since I've been alive. Not only is he honest (which is refreshing), he seems to be a genuinely nice person. But I am disappointed in his presidency. For reasons:

1 While he might be conservative, he seems to try to fix things by throwing money at it. How is that different from how democrats try to fix things? And does it work? Not really.

3 While he's supposed to be against gun control, his administration is against arming pilots. If pilots can't have guns, then who can? I mean, not only are a lot of them ex-military (and have training with guns), they're already in a position of great responsibility. So, by Bush saying they can't be trusted with guns, he's basically saying no one can. And don't give me that argument about how they could damage the plane in flight. They make special ammo that almost certainly won't (and has a side benefit of being very very deadly).

8 I'm sorry, but I don't like illegal immigrants. Immigration is fine, when it's controlled. But we're in a war, and right now, anyone can get over our border with anything. Some might be caught, but the majority will get through. (As Fox News has illustrated on both borders, by sending reporters to sneak across). We need to pull our troops from Korea (since they hate us there anyway - I mean, there were anti-american riots during the world cup - why the heck should be be defending those people when they hate our guts and don't want us there?) and put them on our borders. Because you know, in war, that's where troops belong, at least if they're not fighting the enemy.

13 Several reasons.

He just caved into the ICC, apparently. Sure, he didn't sign it (an in fact, un-signed it), but by not getting immunity from prosecution for our soldiers for peacekeeping, and now not withdrawing troops from peacekeeping without the imunity, he's basically selling them out. They can now be arrested off US soil at any time, even if they haven't committed a real crime. Read European papers - there are already some there that want to prosecture our troops in that wedding party incident. Not to mention US citizens like Henry Kissinger, and for our troops being in Bosnia in the first place.

He also seems to be under the spell of the Saudis. I mean, never mind that 15 of the 9/11 hijackers came from there, or that their exporting of Wahabism is basically the fuel of anti-americanism in the Islamic world, or that they pay off suicide bombers killing women, children, babies, etc in Israel, never mind the hatred against Americans (and Jews) spewed from their government supported imans, etc, etc, etc. I could go on about the Saudis for hours. Yet not only is nothing is being done about them, they are treated almost like masters. Some of the things our government does for them is just unbelieveable.

And whatever happened to free trade? Steel, huge farm subsidies. Blah. Those hurt the economy more than his permitting illegal immigration helps.

I also think the military campaign in Afghanistan should have used more ground troops to entrap Al-Qaeda, not just let them fly to Pakistan. But that's easy to say in hindsight.

Anyway, obviously he's better than Al Gore. But Bush is apparently to the left of many democrats on a lot of things (though obviously not the Gore-Lee-McKinney wing of the democratic party). I don't think that's a good thing for the country, or conservatives.

I'll certainly vote for him again. But he's turned out to be pretty much a moderate. Which is disappointing, IMHO.

A very elegant trap which you have set here, Jim - which allows you to accomplish many things regarding member's true intentions. Bravo. Much like the President's manner of doing things that the masses don't understand. Yet.

Re-elected, at least so far.

Bush has taken a rough hand and played it well. There was no precedent for 9/11, and he dealt well with it at nearly all levels during the first days of crisis.

He endured the Dems jabbering denial at having lost the White House and emerged relatively unscathed.

The current economic climate was not fostered by Bush, and although p/e ratios corrected to historical levels (pre 1980) will mean a market correction of unprecedented proportions, the situation was created under his predecessor's watch.

Nor can I view Bush as being responsible for accounting practices in private firms.

All in all, his administration has nothing near the opening scandal of the Clintons'--despite the media doing their best to find a hook.

These thoughts are not without caveat.

"Homeland Security" has a phraseology reminiscent of the bad old days of Soviet Communism, or in extremis, of National Socialism.

We teeter at the precipice of a slippery slope where many are willing to cast away what rights remain for the illusion of being secure. Will Bush and his minions have the character to resist the lure of such power consolidated? Time will tell.

I am gravely concerned by statements about global warming--as a professional geologist, I can not agree that anthropogenic global warming is even occuring, much less a threat to the world as we know it. Nor could the presence thereof, were it to exist, justify impoverishing a wealthy nation to permit poorer countries to generate far more pollution to achieve similar productive results. There are alreay signs of weakness on this front.

Am I concerned that the UN will gain more power? U bet. It (the UN) has become a Socialist mutual back patting association. But I cannot assume that our absence from the forum will make that any better.

I want our military serving our legitimate national interests, within Constitutional constraints, and properly equipped and trained to do so. It will take more than two terms to rectify the Clinton-era neglect. But deployment within our borders as a police force is questionable, suspending Habeas Corpus dangerous, especially in an ill defined war against a highly fluid enemy.

There is no Dem poised to take the field who would get a vote from me. Few Republicans. Keyes and I disagree on one vital issue, that of slavery reparations. I feel there is no fair way to conduct these, even if the slaves' descendents could be specifically identified. This cannot be done on a basis of race alone; not all blacks in the US are the descendants of slaves, some were owners, others' ancestors were not present to be involved. Not all whites owned slaves, some blacks did, numerous whites are unrelated to anyone present while slavery was permitted. Will the American Indians have to pay too? Forget it, get on with the program.

Keyes has vocally supported reparations in the past. I cannot.

Much remains to be seen, but before we worry about Dubya, let's regain control of the Congress and ditch a few more Clinton appointees who set policy in administrative rulings. There are numerous 'true believers' lurking in the ranks, Clinton holdovers who will take time to winnow out.

I'm neither a Bush-hater nor a 'Bush-bot', Jim, but as long as you brought it up...

13. He's allowing the War on Terror to be orchestrated by career-oriented chickens.

I'd also have to agree somewhat with Item #8, too.

3,4,8

3- Not a gun grabber but a double speaker. He agrees it's an individual right, but not a right that cannot be infringed. He needs to recognize our rights are granted from God and not whomever is in the whitehouse at the time. For instance, the struggle over arming pilots should be an unquestionable given.

4- Patriot Act, maybe not where you live, but in a local paper here, someone has already been labeled a domestic terrorist. Watch tonights fox news on mutiple police abuse and tell me giving them that much power it wont be abused. Also see 8 below

8- I've said it before on here and I'll say it again, if this administration believed a weapon of mass destruction were going to be smuggled into this country, then you would see the military on the borders yesterday. And if they had one, it would go off in Israel, not here. So, let's have open borders and constantly say the threat exists so we can pass any law we want, the majority just goes right along with the illogic of it. My family will no longer vote to block someone, ie. as in Gore. From now on, we will vote for what we feel is right, and our lean now is toward the constitution party over the others. It will be the first time I haven't voted republican.

Finally, yes, I'm glad Bush is in at the moment over Clinton or Gore.

I have to go with number 4 BUT with the qualifier that much of my complaint has to do with things that were done in response to 9/11 and as such it's hard to really gig him on it. Especially seeings how the Congress shares much of this blame. I guess, number 4, but tentatively and this complaint is against the gov't as a whole.

I think George W Bush needs to get reelected. Not just because the other side gets elected if not- but because I believe Dubya is a strong leader and he is slowly getting this ship turned around and going in the right direction. We're not going to undo all of Clinton's mischief in four years because it's more than a matter of just changing laws- it's changing the people's attitudes.

A lot of young people in America today have only ever known Clinton for a President for their whole lives (that they really remember or cared about). They were told this entire time that the GOP were a bunch of racists and Nazis and all kinds of other vile crap. It's going to take some time for us to turn that around and it's going to take a strong Republican to do that, and a clever one. People like Bush, that's a start. We need to get him reelected and America will have time to grow a new generation of teens/young adults that have only ever known Bush and then his Vice President (Condi hopefully) when she gets elected. We need to control the future of the Supreme Court (that is a huge bastion to keep and hold) and we need to take back the Senate and we NEED to reelect this President.

Bottom line, we're not going to be able to go straight to a land that most conservatives would be happy with overnight- it's going to be an arduous journey filled with many long battles that will wear us down- but we can never let up if we want to get where we want to be. People should be patient.

Wobbler.

On too many important issues, GWB took a strong stand, then caved, wobbled, gave in.

I remember with Clinton that every once in a while, he'd "do something right" and I'd think, ok, maybe he's not so bad after all. Then another scandal or corruption would erupt.

GWB is doing similar -- Pickering, Israel, Open Borders, Amnesty for Illegals, etc., and most recent, ICC cave-in.

GWB makes a good strong speech then turns around and pushes or caves on another major issue. It seems his backbone doesn't support his mouth (speech). Sometimes he talks tough, backs down.

Of course, the Demo nominee for 2004 will remind the public of each and every wobble. GWB is a nice guy and he comes across to the public as a nice guy, but the Nation needs and wants a strong leader (after 8 years of Clinton crime and corruption). GWB's talk measures up; GWB's walk doesn't.

United States of America's President and Armed Forces Commander In Chief, George Walker Bush, understands and practices politics in ways that have "Democrats" tearing out their hair and scraping the bottom of their barrels of envy and hatred and rage and lies in their FRuitless efforts to shake either him and/or America's faith and trust in and of him.

He is, thank God -- and will be for the next six and a half years -- my President.

Whoopee.

Opened a can of worms, didn't you?

I have to answer #12. I respect the President as he has the HARDEST JOB IN THE WORLD.

From what I've seen and heard, there's a LOT of armchair politicians on FR. They expound their theories and pound the pulpit of self-righteousness; reality and the process of law do not concern them.

Sure, I don't always agree with the President, but hey, I don't always agree with hubby poorman, mom, my co-workers, or you for that matter. It isn't a character flaw in a person that they don't march exclusively to MY drum.

When are the naysayers going to admit how close we came to disaster in November 2000? Imagine the hell this country would be with an Al Gore at the helm.
Placating terrorists still.
Blaming Americans for others' evil deeds.
Forced moves of those living in "sensitive" forest areas.
Punitive emission laws.
Total dependence on foreign oil.
The Kyoto Treaty signed and our future mortgaged.
The UN Commission trying US soldiers as war criminals.
A severe energy crisis.
Socialized medicine.
Total crackdown on gun ownership.

You could add a LOT more.

I couldn't handle my distant cousin's 14-hour-a-day workload; much less the pressure, media attacks (d@mn them), recalcitrant "allies", backbiting RINOs, backstabbing Dems (pond scum), disasters, world crises, security issues, terror threats, and "glass fishbowl" existence.
