Welcome to the USO Canteen FReeper Style
Message from Snow Bunny to all those who visit the Canteen.
This is how I think of the USO Canteen Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road, a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.
Since it opened it is magical how so many Freepers that post here feel it too. It has been so dear how the Freepers kept making it a cottage - a home-type of place that had a huge living room for them to visit in and a dance floor, a library, etc.
Many Veterans have written to me, saying that the Canteen is like home to them for the first time since they served.
This is your Canteen - a respite from our busy and sometimes troubling world. Make yourself at home.

Our Flag does not only fly at our homes and other buildings.
Our Flag goes to War,it is in the Battle along side our fighting men and women.
And our Flag flys in our HEARTS!

Arlington, Va., Sept. 13, 2001 Military personnel salute as fire and rescue workers unfurl a huge American flag over the side of the Pentagon during rescue and recovery efforts following the 11 Sept. terrorist attack. U.S. Navy photo by Michael W. Pendergrass.
Our American Flag always shines brightly, Always. It aquires its brilliance from the American veterans who have fought and died to preserve it. This flag is our nations very highest honor. There is none higher.
This flag is offered by a grateful nation and the American veterans who have fought and died to preserve it. This flag is given by the United States of America in memory of your loved one. It is for their honorable and faithful service to our beloved country.
I pledge allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands,
one nation, under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.

Beneath an unfurling American flag,
an American soldier tends a wounded
comrade in Gray's depiction of some of
the fighting in the Boxer Rebellion in China.
This detail is from a large panel that depicts
Colonel Liscum at the Battle of Tientsin on
July 13, 1900, when he seized the regimental
standard from a wounded color sergeant and
issued what would be his last order.......
"Keep up the fire!"
"Keep up the fire!" has since been the motto
of the U.S. Army 9th Infantry.

Henry II
Henry II, 151959, king of France (154759), son of King Francis I. His robust physique contrasted with his weak and pliant disposition. Throughout his reign he was governed by Anne de Montmorency, by his mistress Diane de Poitiers, and by François and Charles de Guise. He renewed the struggle against Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (Charles I of Spain), allying himself with the German Protestants despite his own strong Catholicism. War continued under Charles's son King Philip II of Spain, who was allied with Mary Tudor of England, until the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis (1559) ended French pretensions in Italy. In 1558, Calais was conquered from the English. Henry issued a series of increasingly severe edicts against the Protestants and established more firmly the absolute royal power. His queen, Catherine de' Medici, played a minor role during her husband's reign. Henry, accidentally killed by Gabriel de Montgomery in a tournament, was succeeded by Francis II.

A couple lived near the ocean and used to walk the beach a lot. One
summer they noticed a girl who was at the beach pretty much every day. She
wasn't unusual, nor was the travel bag she carried, except for one thing;
she would approach people who were sitting on the beach, glance around
furtively, then speak to them. Generally the people would respond negatively and she
would wander off, but occasionally someone would nod and there would be a
quick exchange of money and something she carried in her bag. The couple
assumed she was selling drugs, and debated calling the cops, but since they
didn't know for sure they just continued to watch her.
After a couple of weeks the wife said, "Honey, have you ever noticed
that she only goes up to people with boom boxes and other electronic
devices?" He hadn't and said so. Then she said, "Tomorrow I want you to get a towel
and our big radio and go lie out on the beach. Then we can find out what she's really doing.
"Well, the plan went off without a hitch and the wife was almost hopping up
and down with anticipation when she saw the girl talk to her husband and
then leave. The man walked up the beach and met his wife at the road.
"Well, is she selling drugs?" she asked excitedly.
"Nope. She's not," he said, enjoying this probably more than he should have.
"Well, What is it, then? What does she do?" his wife fairly shrieked.
The man grinned and said, "She's selling batteries!"
"Batteries?" cried the wife.
"Yup, batteries," he replied.
You
See
"She sells C cells down by the sea shore."

What's the name of that piece? I can't remember. That's
Dies Irae, as in *Dies irae, Dies illa.*
*Lyrics *here*> One of the better-known melodies of the Gregorian Chant, Dies Irae was traditionally ascribed to Thomas of Celano [1260] but now is usually attributed to an unknown Franciscan of that period. The piece is based upon Zep 1:14-16, a reflection upon the final judgment. It was formerly part of the Mass of the Dead and the Office of the Dead, real cheery stuff for a birthday celebration! Today it is found in the Liturgia Horarum for the last week of Ordinary time (34th). In placing it there, the emphasis is upon the upcoming Advent season and Christ's Second Coming. In the Diocese of the United States, it is still used in the Office of the Dead and the Feast of All Souls [Nov. 2] or Dia de Los Calveras as our neighbors down south call it.
Pretty bluesy/dreary for a birthday tune, but some folks don't look forward to 'em much. especially when I drag the banjolin out....

Are we talking about the same piece? I thought it was a piece from an Opera. What you put up was very interesting.
