San Antonio TX area flood thread

Posted on 07/02/2002 7:40:34 AM PDT by newsperson999

Record rainfall in SAN ANTONIO TX with over 10 inches at the airport breaking the all time month record for July in ONE DAY! doppler says 15-20 inches have fallen just north of SAN ANTONIO..roads closed, water rescues in progress. Rainfall rates of 3-5 inches per hour have been fallening in the area just north SAN ANTONIO. New radar shots the last few minutes show Moderate-Heavy rain moving/developing back towards SAN ANTONIO from the northwest.

Folks the system has stalled and I believe may be forming a tropical depression over land...How can this be? Well so much rain has fallen in the area and there is so much standing 78-80 degree water around its almost like being over an ocean. This has happened before with hurricane Danny which moved inland for days, weakened to nothing, dumped 14 inches of rain ahead of its path over NC..and was a strong tropical storm with 65 MPH winds as it moved off the coast!

In fact new radar shots showing almost "feeder" bands forming near the gulf.. Looks like the circulation is just NE SAN ANTONIO by 20 miles or so...Both visible and infared Satellite also very impressive

"It's Floodin' Down in Texas"

The exact song that came to my mind yesterday. I love the version off of his "Live at the El Mocambo" video. Possibly the greatest live guitar performance ever captured on film. Stevie and Jimmie are good Dallas boys.

The heaviest rain seems to be falling on the west side of San Antonio up in the Hill Country. Most of Lackland sits on high, but level ground southeast of downtown San Antonio. My guess is she's sitting in a classroom somewhere high and dry. Not to worry.

Don't EVER RISK A HIGH WATER CROSSING!!!!!

So right. Just watched a rescue on our noon news where 4 rescuers had to be rescued themselves because someone chose to push their luck and drive thru the water.

Lackland AFB should be OK, it's just northeast of downtown SA, and the worst is west of there. Just an educated guess, but she should be fine.

All y'all Texas Freepers stay safe in that area -- looks a lot like Allison last year, and that's not a good comparison. It's hell when you get a low pressure system that stalls over an area and just sits there dragging moisture off the Gulf and dumping it over an area for days.

From KMOL.com:

"The flooding has caused huge problems in the I-10 and Boerne Stage Road area. Witnesses report seeing a "wall of water" hit in the area of Leon Springs. Fifty to 100 cars are reported stopped. National Guard Blackhawk helicopters have been called into the area to help with the investigation. These helicopters are designed to transport 14 people at a time. The water is flooding from Leon Springs and literally "feed" into the highway. Reports from the scene say several well-know restaurants -- including Rudy's and Macaroni's - have been flooded. One local resident reports getting 14 inches of water in the last 24 hours."

Lackland AFB is due west of downtown San Antonio (I live in SA, by the way). The entire area is flooded not just a portion of town. However, not to worry, Lackland is on a sort of plateau and would guess that there are no problems there. There are some very dangerous areas within a few miles of LAFB (i.e. Leon Creek) that should be avoided at all costs. As with everyone else in Bexar & surrounding counties, don't go out unless you have to.

no, just spoofing, although I wouldn't be surprised to see some of those guys in little rubber rafts with signs that read "willing to paddle for food"... actually, I'm watching the Highland Mall lake grow...if it keeps this up, I may give my class a break tonight and turn 'em loose early...

Trust me...if Lackland ever 'floods', the city is mostly gone by then. There are some heavy runoffs on base and around it, but the base itself is on fairly high ground. The Medina annex, sperated by about a mile from the main base, has more problems with high water (you basically drive 'downhill' to get to it, but when I worked there we always kept a close watch on the 'low water crossings' (which means 'low road, high water'). The true risks are for folks from the base trying to get home during times of high water, but since she's in Basic that's not a concern.

In other words, don't worry, she'll be fine.

Austin is lined up in one of those feeder bands...look like 2+ inches last hour on east side of town...Doppler radar whows widespread 15+ inches of rain north of san antonio with a max now of 23.5 inches on one radar and 19.2 on another. San Antonia doppler itself shows a max of 15.9, the radar seems to under estamating the rainfall which is sometimes common right by the radar site.
