AB 1058 Anti-SUV bill clone passes in CA
Hegh Hewitt | 2002/07/01 | Hugh Hewitt

Posted on 07/01/2002 6:51:05 PM PDT by ZGuy

John Campbell (R) just announced on the Hugh Hewitt show that the democrats in Sacramento have pulled a fast one. Bill 1058 which has been written about on several posts originally failed. The democrats took a bill on Friday night which dealt with an unrelated subject and gutted out the language. They then inserted the exact language of 1058 and the senate passed it Friday. This (Monday) afternoon the house got the bill. The democrats had to hold a hearing and every office in the capital was available but they chose to hold the "hearings" in the smallest office in the building - the only one which had no TV cameras, no radio, no cameras, and no space for reporters or the public to attend. They then passed a vote making this bill exempt from the 3-day waiting period required by law for public input. The democrats just passed the bill in the last 45 minutes and it now goes to the governor's desk. No republicans voted for the bill in either chamber. One highlight - (Dennis?) Cardoza - the democrat running for Condit's seat voted for the bill in the central valley. He's toast.

For what it's worth, your state of California is lost! Get over it and stop wasting your time! Every damn day we here on FR are watching bill after stupid bill being passed out there that defies all logic but yet your citizens sit idly by with glazed looks in their eyes nodding stupidly at every erosion of their personal freedoms.

If you were smart you would get the hell out of that ugly communist state while you are still able. Weather be damned, there are other places in this country just as nice or even better......

Sorry pal but the mere mention of California makes me sick these days......

To be really accurate, I guess they should be called totalitarian socialists.

But whatever the moniker, we need to stop these people ... now.

I really love to make the "Greenies" angry. Every now and then I'll fire up the 30 footer motorhome and just tool around town. Makes SUVs look like economy cars. =o)

You pinged me.

You must have me confused with someone who likes SUV's.

I agree with every word, Doc-Joe.

My JRT is so smart that she scares me. A few years she figured out how to unlock and open a window, and did so while I was out of the house. She then figured out how to take a dowel out of window jamb (prior to unlocking and opening the window). When I finally got the window to stay closed (curtain rod where she couldn't reach it), she got even by widdling on my bed.

My condolences re the stroke. I'll give Janey an extra hug and pat for you.

I fear that the appetite of the market for cars of high fuel
consumption is what is putting money into the hands of these
wacky mideast oil nations,

Well, here is one Kalifornian that drives an Expedition, and intends
to continue. You greenies need to let us drill for
oil here, and mabe add a few nuclear plants.

If I were the mayor, I'd make it a police point of emphasis to
ticket every SUV

When you grow up and can afford one of your very own, will
your attitude change?

Sorry for the late response I am on vacation with my SUV.

No offense to yourself Joe, I agree with alot of your stances but the reputation that California has achieved for itself was created solely by Californians and nobody else.

Gee, no credit at all to the illegals?

You Kalies need to try a little more fuel efficiency until you get those plants built. Us New Yorkers don't need to suffer another 3000 deaths.

I'm approaching 50 and have a top 5% income, so you are wide of the mark on my motivations. I live in the city (by choice; I don't fancy spending 2-4 hours a day commuting) and hunt for parking on the street. SUVs, vans, and minivans hog parking space and block vision. The first is an irritation; the second is a safety hazard. I'm pefectly serious about sending the cops to ticket illegally parked SUVs and vans that are parked right up on the corner blocking the sight lines.

That said, I understand the attraction of minivans for families with multiple kids. I test drove a couple before purchasing my last car for exactly that reason. A very short drive was enough to convince me that one would have to be slightly insane to drive and park such a behemoth on city streets. However, if you're a suburban cowboy and the world beyond your cul-de-sac is mostly office parks, malls, and big parking lots, SUVs probably make perfect sense. But they're lousy city cars.

All this is irrelevant, you drive what you want/(can afford) and
I will drive what I want/(can afford), else next you will be
telling me what I have to eat. What church to attend..........

This simply boggles my mind, that you would try to connect
9-11 to SUV drivers. You want to attack someone, go after
the morons that created the policy of Arab appeasement, for oil,
instead of drilling here or in Alaska.

It's your attitude that boggles. You have no desire whatsoever to use more fuel efficient cars until we can get another oil source. Assuming there is enough oil in Alaska, we're not going to have a delivery system to get to the lower 48, any time soon. In the meantime we have to kiss the asses of these mideast wackos in order to satisfy the oil appetite of our transportation system.

Hey, don't knock it. The "SMART" car is the wave of the future. You see a lot of them in Germany, and they go plenty fast enough. I even saw one on the Garden State Parkway last month, with Frankfurt, GE license plates.

I'm a hard core conservative on almost every issue, but national security trumps gas guzzling. Widespread use of cars like this will mean countless dollars staying out of the hands of the financial supporters of Jihad. They make great second cars. Sure, people have the right to commute to work by themselves in full full size pickups and SUVs; I just want to see economic incentives put in place so that many more people will choose to commute in these tiny things instead.

I'd be the first one to defend your right not drive one of those things. As I previously stated, I want to see incentives so that many more people choose smaller cars. In Germany, regular unleaded is currently around $4.30 a gallon. That's a big incentive to drive more fuel efficient cars. Some people there still choose to drive big SUVs and big Mercedes sedans, but many more choose smaller cars. I wouldn't mind much heftier gas taxes (not quite as hefty as Germany though!), but ONLY if there were a corresponding cut in other taxes.

BTW, you'd be surpised at how far the small cars have come in the ergonomics department. I recently read a review of the new Mini Cooper; the reviewer was 6'3" tall and he said he had plenty of leg and head room. I believe that Americans have become somewhat spoiled by large vehicles. In Europe, the Ford Focus is a mid-sized car. We don't even produce anything here that resembles what they would call an economy car. I rented a car at the Frankfurt Airport last month that would make a Geo Metro look like a big car. Guess what? It was comfortable, fast, and handled great (although I'm sure glad nobody had to sit in the back).

Fuel efficiency is one of the few topics in which you will ever see me favorably compare Europe to America. Pedestrian friendly cities is another.

You need to check and see exactly what percentage of our oil we get from the middle east. I

That price probably consists of very high taxes and does not reflect the true cost of production and delivery. Since that is the case, do you want people to be taxed excessively if they drive SUVs?
