Tipper: Al's Defeat Drove Me to Shrink

Former second lady Tipper Gore was so shaken by her husband's failure to win the White House two years ago that she sought psychiatric counseling to reassure herself she wasn't mentally ill.

On Friday Mrs. Gore told the Memphis Commercial Appeal that the Supreme Court's decision to stop the 2000 election's Florida recount left her in "a state of shock."

"It took me a while to work my way out of that," she explained. "I couldn't believe that the voting would be stopped."

Her husband's defeat, coupled with the October 2001 death of her mother, Margaret Ann Aitcheson, sent Mrs. Gore into such a severe emotional tailspin that by the end of last year she began to doubt her own sanity.

Gore told the Appeal that she checked with her doctor to make sure she wasn't suffering a relapse of the mental illness she suffered after her son Albert was hit by a car in 1989.

"Am I clinically depressed?" the first lady wannabe said she asked point-blank.

The doctor told her, "No, this is a normal response to what happens in tough times," she recalled.

Still, the Gores decided to take a seven-week vacation to Spain, Italy and Greece, during which Mrs. Gore managed to regain her emotional stability.

But the revelation of his wife's second bout with possible mental illness has some wondering whether former Vice President Al Gore might be forced to shelve plans for another White House run to spare his wife further mental anguish.

Mrs. Gore's late mother also battled mental illness her entire life.

During the 2000 campaign, Tipper Gore traveled with her husband only three or four days a week, explaining that she needed the remainder of the week "to recover."

In 1999, after revealing her first bout with depression, she acknowledged that stress on the campaign trail could cause a relapse.

"It is something that I am aware of," she told Newsweek. "I now know my limits. I have in my younger years, in my 40s, been overextended. I don't want to do that again."

Mrs. Gore continued:

"I am going to try to continue to make sure that as I go through my life I know how I perform the best and what my limits are and be sure that I design my schedule and my life that way."

Well I thank Tipper Gore for shouldering the burden for all of us. For if Algore had won, millions of us would have been driven to visit shrinks.

LOL.

"Ole Crusty needs the victim-crap herself..."

You are so correct! And since the 2 women never did get along, Ole Crusty must be fuming over this interview...

Could this be the "escape hatch" for Gore, when he decides he won't run again?

IMO, you're almost 100% correct. The difference I see is that the Dim party machine will be making that decision. Gore is despicable for using his wife as cover for the embarrassment of not being picked to run again.

You go Tipper!!!!!! Another "hero" for the Rats to rally around, a first lady who questions her sanity!!!

On the other hand, I questioned the sanity of the American public for electing Billy Boy to a second term and for giving Sore/Loserman so many votes.

On my side of the family, I've lost 3 loved ones to colon cancer, my husband has lost 2 family members to the same disease.

I'm personally thankful Bush has set an example of how a single test can save lives. While it's not the most pleasant topic to hear about over dinner, having a colonoscopy saves lives.

But I agree with you on two points, I've heard enough about our elected leaders sex lives and mental problems to last a lifetime.

I still say Tipper is an abused spouse.

Any husband who would make a special effort to show his wife's pregnant nude self-portrait (painted no doubt while in therapy) on a video which was shown NATIONALLY at the convention is a bad, bad man.

Plus that kiss looked way too aggressive to me.

But that wasn't the real AlGore. Someone just told him to do that.

Perhaps Looking Ahead, Gore Reflects With Regret

I have a little different take on this. It's my opinion AlGore IS going to run again, or try to at least. His wife's last bout of mental instability has been hidden since election, but could not remain so forever. So he's getting the news out early so there's time to turn the lemon into lemonade, and also so it will be forgotten and/or "old news" before the Dems select a presidential candidate.

Typical Klintonian political strategy.

It's so cynical how AlGore uses his wife as a tool and a prop. To further his raw ambition, her problems are trotted out for the world to see. Equally disturbing is how Tipper allows herself to be used in this manner.

To me, it's apparent we have another pathological couple to deal with. It's sickening that Bill and Hill are still up at the plate, and Al and Tipper are in the batter's circle.

#70: How typical of you, babe!

How-the-hell did you ever survive in Chi-town with an attitude like yours?

Wanna BBQ some Egrets and drink too much?

And do you got any bookmarks to those Egret threads? I lost 'em when I cooked my 'puter.

Smootches, babe............FRegards

"...I still say Tipper is an abused spouse. . .."

You spelled it wrong - it's: 'souse', and Al's a pothead!

These people couldn't be more dysfunctional if they stuffed their dog in a woodchipper!

I hope he tries to run. We need more comedy in politics.............FRegards, babe

"Yeah, I seriously thought you could just keep voting til it turned out the way you want."

Still, the Gores decided to take a seven-week vacation to Spain, Italy and Greece, during which Mrs. Gore managed to regain her emotional stability.

"...so we could recommit to our work for the common people and help battle those no-good wealthy..."

Tipper: Al's Defeat Drove Me to Shrink

I wonder if this was because Al's Defeat Drove Al to Shrink.

Also, regarding her assertion that she went to the shrink to convince herself that she wasn't nuts: ha ha ha, only someone who was nuts would do that-- "Hi, I'm here to spend $150 and upwards for a 45 minute hour so you can convince me I'm not in need of your services and never come back. Of course, if you should happen to think that I need more visits, well, then, I'll be glad to keep coming until you tell me I'm better."

Is that blouse a map of her chakras or what? Also, it looks as though Al could use one of those man-bras.

Does anyone else think it's weird that she doesn't mention that 9-11 might have been a factor in her depression?

She's been there, done that. She said that it was all so confusing because the government wouldn't tell her exactly what to do to be safe, or words to that effect.

That last part is still a matter for debate, but I can see it now - the Dems in Congress will push through legislation to establish some sort of right to European vacations for all those depressed folks who can't afford them. Maybe the family living in the house the Gores rented to them - you know, the one without working toilets - would be entitled to a Parisian getaway, just for all their aggravation.

Admitting publicly that you are a Nut Case really isn't good PR

The base they are targeting their message to is full of Oprah-watching whiner women who love to wallow in self-pity. I think they'll dig Tipper's mental trouble.
