Israel intends denying entry to Louis Farrakhan, after the leader of the Nation of Islam organization declared that he planned to propose mediation initiatives of his own for the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel is also afraid that Farrakhan's visit could be provocative and result in disturbances, particularly if he asks to tour the mosques on the Temple Mount.
Farrakhan is considered a radical and has spoken out against Israel and the Jews in the past. The U.S. and Jewish establishment refuse to maintain any ties with him or his organization.
During a current tour of the Middle East, Farrakhan denounced President George W. Bush's peace plan, charging that it places too many demands on the Palestinians. He called for a condemnation of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians and the harsh living conditions in the territories.
Farrakhan also proposed a plan of his own, according to which the sides would take advantage of his religious authority to mediate between Hamas and Israel in an effort to achieve an end to the violence.
In its decision to deny entry to Farrakhan, the Foreign Ministry also considered Britain's refusal to allow the man in. The ministry believes that the negative press from the ban on his entry will be easier to manage than the possible consequences of a visit.
Question, Isn't the Nation of Isalm what used to be called black muslims? If so Farrakan might have some problems with the local mullas.
I think he's also been repeatedly refused entry to the UK.
Minister Louis Farrakhan: In His Own Words
On Israel
"They [Israel] wouldn't allow me to go to Jerusalem. If I had gone they might have stoned me. I didn't want to repeat history. I know they stoned Jesus. I know they've killed the prophets of God there."
Saviours' Day Speech, Chicago, 2/22/98
"I believe that for the small numbers of Jewish people in the United States, they exercise a tremendous amount of influence on the affairs of government. ... Mr. President, Mr. Clinton, instead of exercising the strength of a man whose country contributes at least $4 billion every year to the state of Israel, America has influence in Israel but is not using that influence in a constructive way, but, rather, pays lip service to the Palestinians while she bows to the dictates of Netanyahu and the strong political Jewish lobby."
