The courts ruled that the Pledge as is is uncostitutional becase it violates a statue that does not even exist in the Constitution.
Why do you wonder why people are livid? This is a violation of our rights of free speech and the freedom to believe anything not on the liberal agenda.

You're ignoring non-monotheistic religions, religions who believe that the word "God" is sacred and should not be spelled out and religions that believe that the name "God" should only be used in specific circumstances and is not something to be trivialized by inserting it into a mundane pledge or stamping it onto paper currency.

I, Personally, have always had a problem with the pledge due to the "one nation...indivisible" part of it.

I always thought that was unconstitutional.

Had the discussion several weeks ago that no place in the Constitution did it say "separation of Church and State" and in researching found this site at Find Law that you can type in a phrase and find what you are looking for in the Constitution and background on the phrase.

For the first time in the history of civilization, a nation's government was born and structured out of a recognition that the life, rights, liberty (and the laws to protect them) of each human being are "endowed by the Creator" and that, in America, even those in positions of power in government are bound by that recognition and are to live under it.

In all previous government arrangements, it was some form of government over man. In America, however, it was The Creator, over People, over their Government--an amazing concept that has produced more freedom and opportunity for the oppressed from all over the world than has ever existed in the entire history of the world!

Just because some judges--whose law school preparation did not include an understanding of the Founding philosophy--misinterpret the Constitution does not make it so.

If it redirects us to a study of the founding philosophy, post 9/11, then it may be good for all of us!

We are an AMERICAN nation....not a God-Stuff one, though everybody can practice whatever religion they choose - in fact, are guaranteed the right to do OR NOT to do so.

The Pledge of Allegiance is lovely. The words Eisenhower so arrogantly added in 1954 - the "under God" words, are indeed unconstitutional and need to be removed, because they make a large segment of the population feel extremely uncomfortable, and those people are just as much TRUE AMERICANS as you are!

No surprise here from the "9th Jerk-It Court of Schlemiels", as Savage puts it.

Red Skelton foresaw this in his widely circulated explanation of the Pledge. It's just too bad to see his hope dashed (for now, until SCOTUS overturns this garbage). Actually, I think the vote will be 6-3.

This is why Bush has had to gag on the legislation he has signed. He must get control of the courts and place even handed jurist who will rule by law and the constitution. The rats will sink on this issue, I hope the supremes will wait until late Nov. to throw this garbage out.

You're a brave one here! I personally like the "under God" phrase, but learn here that it was added later. What was the motive? Pandering? Why isn't the pledge before before 1955 good enough? Was America "socialist" before then? Very interesting issue, should generate a lot of discussion.
