Men won't commit to marriage because they enjoy a sexually active single life in a social climate that doesn't push them to marry, a new report says. Young men are indeed "commitment phobic," which is bad news for young women who want build a family before they get too old, said researchers Barbara Dafoe Whitehead and David Popenoe, who run the National Marriage Project at Rutgers University. "The median age of first marriage for men has reached 27, the oldest age in our nation's history," Mr. Popenoe said. "If this trend of men waiting to marry continues, it is likely to clash with the timing of marriage and childbearing for the many young women who hope to marry and bear children before they begin to face problems associated with declining fertility," he said. There are several specific reasons for why young men are avoiding marriage, Mr. Popenoe and Mrs. Whitehead said yesterday in their 2002 State of Our Unions report, titled, "Why Men Won't Commit: Exploring Young Men's Attitudes About Sex, Dating and Marriage." The report is based on interviews with 60 single men, 25 to 33, who live in four parts of the country. Primarily, young men are enjoying a sexually active single life

Regarding my comment "If a man wants to continue having a healthy sex life, the last thing he should do it get married."

I am very surprised and disappointed that NO ONE has detected the sarcasm in it, and that it is a very very old joke. Though most jokes are based in reality.

Come on people, your better than that.

It's not a matter of refuting anything, since the situation isn't all one way or all the other. Both women AND MEN are to blame for the current state of affairs. Your post puts the blame for failed marriages 100% on the backs of women. Men never do anything--they're just taken to the cleaners by evil, scheming women and the law is on their side, according to your post.

Maybe if you had been a little less absolutist and one-sided, I wouldn't have accused you of whining. But you ought to listen to yourself. Oooh! Poor widdle men! The mean, evil, scheming, slutty women are taking advantage of the mild-mannered nice guys who are completely gullible and innocent and blameless! It's all their fault, not ours! We men are victims! Victims of women and "the system"! Oooh!

Did your wife's lawyer out-lawyer your lawyer in the divorce or something?

Pardon my bluntness but.....This is simply common sense....why should a man buy a cow if he can get the milk for free?

Feminists who bought into 'sexual freedom' only brought this on themselves.

(BTW I'm old enough to remember when sex before marriage and/or having a baby 'out of wedlock' was rarer and was not approved by society!)

If a man wants to continue having a healthy sex life, the last thing he should do is freep ten hours a day, every cotton-pickin' day. (Oh no honey, I'm not on FR again, just visiting a few pornography sites.)

Personally, I couldn't be happier with the status of my marriage and I believe my husband feels the same way. Maybe I'll let him out of the basement later and he can post for himself. :)

You couldnt imagine how many people remember that post by me and how often it is brought up.

I think I am remembered more for that post than anything else I have ever said on here.

And it was a damn funny post if I do say so myself.

Isn't it nice to know that the woman with whom you are
sleeping isn't a festering, STD beslimed swamp? Besides, marriage (sweet mawwage)
has benefits that live far outside the confines of the bedroom.

Since when was "wedded bliss" equivalent to being "sexually active"?

Of course, the guys are not going to marry these women. When it comes to marriage, guys get picky. The guys know full well what sort of women these are.

And, guys don't really worry about a clock. Men don't really have a problem finding younger women for mates. Women who are getting past that certain age don't have the same fortune if they look for younger men.

Women have devalued themselves tremendously. But, they don't even know it. Sexual equality has been a nightmare for women even while the girls enjoy sexual promiscuity. The harsh realities will make themselves known later.

I think I know what you're talking about. Enjoying each other's presence--almost like wearing your favorite old clothes, but that way of putting it is misleading unless you know what I'm talking about. It IS better as you go along, but in a different way. Is that sort of what you mean? Mr. wimpycat and I have been together 12 years (married almost 9).
