LOXLEY, Ala. -- Authorities in Loxley, Ala., are investigating the alleged beating of a preacher by funeral mourners who didn't like his blunt eulogy.
Glynis Bethel told The Associated Press that her husband -- the Rev. Orlando Bethel -- was attacked during a June 14 funeral and dragged out of the church.
That's because Bethel told mourners the deceased was in Hell and that they were headed the same way.
The dead man was Glynis Bethel's uncle.
Orlando Bethel referred to him as a "drunkard and a fornicator."
Glynis Bethel, who's also a preacher, says "the fornicators didn't like what he said so they got up and beat him."
She says police didn't make any arrests, so she and her husband -- who may have a broken nose -- are taking out warrants.
It's amusing how the mouners (drunkards & fornicators) who obviously don't believe there is a Hell, got so upset when someone mentions they are going to Hell.
They should have just laughed at the notion, right?
Well, in my case, the deceased, an uncle, had bastard kids strung from Alaska to Maine, none of whom knew him as "daddy". During his short lifetime he boozed away a fortune, and a more selfish man there never was.
I always thought the minister should have said, " Get ready Peter, here he comes", and then sat down.
No, I would sue the preacher who betrayed the trust of the family by turning the purpose and tradition of a eulogy upside down to hurt people during a very vulnerable time. It is generally considered bad form to speak ill of the dead, to do so at his funeral is especially wicked and cruel.
You get an A+ for most sound reasoning of those here.
Great comment and you're right, preachers get a lot of money to make up excuses and lies about where fornicators and other sinners souls have gone.
We should respect them!
I know the world is full of rotten folks, and I know that they die and have funerals.
And I don't think one should blatantly lie about the person's vices. If your uncle had kids all over who didn't even know him, I don't think he should be eulogized as "a dedicated and loving father."
I just can't imagine that a funeral would be turned into a smear-fest by the preacher, of all people. We can avoid touchy issues and find something nice to say that will console the mourners and give some sense of meaning to the life of the deceased.
But we also know that born again Christians still sin. No one can truly know where someone else is going in the afterlife.
In any case, this is one funny story. The first 20-30 posts really made me shoot soda out my nose. Thread bookmarked, and I'm emailing it around. :)
Great story! I felt like doing that at my brother in laws..
The man had a "position" (not a job:>) with a major corp. He made alot of money..his wife and 5 kids lived in a 4 room cottage...he drank from the time the sun came up till it went down..he had the disposition of a drunk....he was a nasty man.
When his wife was dying the corp moved him to another city to try to sober him up...forget that ..he bought a house in the innercity for the money he got from his cottage here ..and kept on drinking. His kids did a fine job of raising themselves after mom died ( Dad needed a caretaker as he was always drunk)..they are fine people..IMHO dad deserved to go to Hell too. But no one would say that out loud!
Hey folks, that whole Gulf Coast area from Waveland, MS all the way to Panama City Beach, FL is known as the REDNECK RIVERIA. Sugar white sand beaches, nice people, reasonable hotel and condo rates. Damn! I'd better shut up or everyone will be wanting to vacation there and it will get too crowded!! (Perdido Key is our personal favorite!!)
Blessings Rock!
I do not believe that the minister at my uncles funeral was able to fool the Good Lord. Surely he fooled no one in the handful of people that were in attendance.
True. Besides, something tells me, that according to the Rev. Orlando Bethel, anyone who drinks a glass of wine, or has 2 beers a week is a "drunkard".
