Nickelodeon's June 18 special on homosexual parenting was not a sensitive presentation on a delicate issue; it was a slick piece of cultural propaganda designed to intimidate kids.
In airing the program, the nation's preeminent cable TV channel for children has traded on its brand to provide a new avenue for advocacy of homosexuality.
Aired without commercial interruption after rumors that advertisers didn't want to touch this 30-minute teenage gabfest with a 10-foot pole, the show went to considerable lengths to promote homosexuality and portray even measured, rational disagreement with homosexual behavior as narrow minded and hate-inspired.
The program was promoted as a 'news' show designed for youngsters, but it was little more than a platform for often uninformed opinion from fewer than a dozen teenagers; indoctrination; and the gay proselytizing of three adult in-studio guests.
Void of factual information about the considerable documented health risks associated with homosexual conduct, the program instead staked out a 'take no prisoners' approach to the subject: You either accept and agree with homosexuality or you are guilty of hate.
Among the kids on the show were a few who noted their disagreement with homosexuality based on religious grounds, along with a few pre-packaged sound bites from Culture and Family Institute Senior Fellow Peter LaBarbara and portions of a longer pre-recorded interview with Rev. Jerry Falwell. But these program elements, doubtlessly included in the name of 'balance,' were thin intellectual gruel compared with the overwhelmingly liberal slant of the program.
The show's brief introduction was followed by a gauzy feature segment about a kid being raised by two lesbians and the anxiety she experienced as a result of the intolerance of some of her classmates.
The in-studio kids, three of whom were from households with one or more homosexual parents, then proceeded to swap anecdotes and opinions about homosexuality, alternately demonstrating both the wisdom and naivete of youth.
A subsequent segment of the program delved into some of the reasons many people don't agree with homosexuality, but the entirely gracious remarks by LaBarbara and Falwell were stitched together with those of hard-line homosexuality advocates.
After another round of teen perspective, including a brief discussion on whether there may or may not be any substantive difference between being raised by a mom and dad versus being raised by homosexuals, a third pre-recorded segment was aired, this one equating homosexuality with religion and race.
Ironically, when one child on the set expressed his reservations about homosexuality on religious grounds, he was summarily dismissed as closed minded by a girl raised by homosexuals. So much for tolerance.
Further evidence of the program's pre-determined intention was offered by the closing credits, which acknowledged the cooperation of a smorgasbord of some of the nation's most militant homosexuality advocacy groups, including Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, and the Human Rights Campaign.
Nickelodeon and supporters of the program it aired Tuesday night will beat their breast about how the show offered a balanced, informed and age-appropriate examination of an issue they say is important to kids.
In fact, Nickelodeon and the show's producers offered up a liberal catechism for children designed to browbeat the next generation into further paying homage to one of the most destructive behaviors on the face of the Earth.

Ah....so you should read everything David Duke writes so you won't be ignorant about racists? I know some people who believe the Holocaust was faked and they really would love to educate you. After all, you don't want to be ignorant about such matters.
BTW Fred Phelps wants to know when you can attend his class on homosexuality. He is very concerned about your ignorance about his views.
That reason ALONE should have kept that program off of Nickelodeon. But I'll give you more reason to keep this smut off of TV.
Gen 1:27 So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Gen 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. Rom 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Rom 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
Rom 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Rom 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Rom 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
Rom 1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
Rom 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
Rom 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
Rom 1:30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
Rom 1:31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
Rom 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
You wrote "With proper discussion, the show could be a real learning experience." Try this, with study of God's word, we can see that homosexuality is SIN and that it is an UNNATURAL function in God's creation. Homosexuals are WILLFULLY participating in UNNATURAL, SINFUL acts. To describe homosexuality in anyother way is a lie and a deception.
That isn't hate and intolerance, that is the word of God. I hope and pray that these people read the word of God and repent of their sins. But I will go to my grave fighting these sons of Satan for trying to recruit new homosexuals from the ranks of our children. Remember, homosexuals don't reproduce, they recruit.
I pray to God in heaven that no homosexual ever approaches my 2 sons.
Why not? Don't they care about kids being teased at school because their parents molest them? DO they HATE molested kids? Don't they know "ignorance is the mother of evil"?
I'm an ex-Christian (it's a choice ya' know -- I wasn't born that way). I find new reasons every day to remind me why.
So you hate Christians? That doesn't sound very tolerant. A Christian child might commit suicide because of your dangerous hatred and intolerance.
What -- child molestors and murderers can't be loving parents, if you just leave that one thing you find objectionable aside? My response was to your knee-jerk that nothing can be done about it. Up to giving it a first thought, yet?

Umm, that was a boy. A sad boy who more than made the point against lesbian parents.
I guarantee that if Nickelodeon did a show about respecting Hindus or Buddhists, the religious right wouldn't care less.
I'm not so sure about that. There are plenty of people here who claim to have cornered the market on salvation.
1. Sweet, kind, beloved friend and frequent visitor to Nick...Rosie O'Donnell. Sitting there angelically and non-threateningly as the "face of the gay parent".
2. The heroic gay New York firefighter.
That this show was ever considered is an enormous look into the thinking of programmers at a children's network. For lots of parents having to deal with homosexuality at this point in their children's lives, isn't fair and is being pushed on them by this show.
Sure you did. If you criticize them, you must hate them. If I criticize homosexuality, that means I hate homosexuals, right?
So we should teach tolerance for polygamy so kids whose parents are polygamists won't get screwed up?
The only number I've heard is just over 500 couples. That's out of 280 million people.
Why is this such a pressing issue that must be dealt with on a children's network?
Why is teasing a child with gay parents any worse than teasing the fat kid? The skinny kid? The kid with the big nose or the ones with hugely obese parents?
Why not deal with bulling of all kids who are different or whose parents are different?
Because in creating an issue, the pro-homosexual crowd slaps down any negative positioning as "hate".
The real point of the show, as told on Chris Matthews show by a member of Glaad, was to further the cause of gay marriage. That'll be the next Nick News Special.
I hope that you are right. I guess my biggest complaint about the "gay movement" is that it seems to preach tolerance but doesn't practice it very well. Can you imagine the outcry if Jerry Falwell opened a church in San Francisco at Castro and Market? It would certainly be vandalized or worse.
I truly believe that "gay leaders" do not represent the majority of beliefs and values of the gay population. It's all ideology with them. By the same token, it is the more fanatical, radical fundamentalists who are always quoted in the press, who are always good for an inflammatory soundbite. I believe that they, too, do not represent the views of the majority of Christians in this country, whose views I would guess fall into the "two consenting adults in the privacy of their room" spectre.
I think there is common ground somewhere. But I think the onus is on the "average homosexual" to wake up and see where their "movement" is leading him/her.
