OK, I am suprised this hasn't been posted yet. I did a search on Smart, House, and Garage, and came up with nothing.
Anyway, each new piece of information gets progressively weird. Now it looks like there is no evidence of break-in, so this possible but highly unlikely story comes out. I continue to pray for the girl, but am now leaning towards this being the work of a family member or close friend.

am now leaning towards this being the work of a family member or close friend. And the family is covering for him, by releasing this story of how an intruder might've gotten in...?

And the family is covering for him, by releasing this story of how an intruder might've gotten in...? I really don't know, but, while possible, I think that the stranger theory is so unlikely that it is not unreasonable to speculate on other possibilities.

Hmmm...an intruder might sneak in and hide in the basement. Doesn't sound very likely to me. How about Prof. Plum in library?

She's been missing for nearly two weeks, and it took him THIS LONG to "remember" about the garage door?
Yeah, right.
To: Rodney King
Hmmm, the police discredit this theory that the assailant broke in by means of cutting a hole in the screen, and now the family suddenly has a new theory as to how they entered? How convenient.
This is Jon Benet Part II I'm afraid and we may never find out what happened to that girl. But her family knows. You can be damn sure of that.

Hours before the abduction, the Smart family returned from an end-of-the-year function at Bryant Intermediate School, where Elizabeth was supposed to perform her harp. Her family arrived too late for that, but she received awards for academics and physical fitness This is also newsworthy. Who would be late for something like that? Perhaps there was a big fight at home. If not, I'll bet that Elizabeth was pissed when they got home, or her parents were pissed is she was the reason they were late.
Not that one would kill over that, but it is highly likely there was a family conflict over this, the night of the "abduction". A fight on a night like this is certainly interesting, and I am sure is being pondered by the investigators.

Read the story. The father reported the open garage door on June 6, immediately after the abduction. It's just now been reported. Geez people.

Smart in an interview on June 6 revealed that his powered garage door shut itself only halfway Apparently, it's just now being released to the public, but the cops always knew about the door. The thing about missing her harp performance is strange, though, and why make sure to tell us that they prayed together, except for PR purposes?
To: Rodney King
I saw the interview with the Dad this morning. It sure stinks. I wonder if he is related to the Dam's or Ramseys. It doesn't fit (his comments)
To: Rodney King
This "family fight" business is nonsense. They have six children. They probably had to go from one function to another. That's happened to us before when our six children were small. Nobody gets hysterical. The family saw her get her awards. They are obviously supportive of her harp performances. She wouldn't get excited because they had to miss one.
What is with all you people who want to believe the worst about this poor family?
Again, if you read the story, and all the others on this topic that have come out in the last 24 hours: The dad reported the open garage door to the police during his initial interviews on June 6. Read the story before you start spinning your mean-spirited theories. The media have just now picked up on it.

I agree, and I don't see whats so unbelievable or unlikely about this. I have left my garage door open for more than a couple of hours. Once it was open the entire night! Good thing it's not on the front of the house.

"am now leaning towards this being the work of a family member or close friend."
I'm leaning towards her running off with her boy friend.

The business about the family prayer being released for PR purposes is another silly assumption. It looks like the media have just gotten hold of details of the initial interview of Ed Smart. He was obviously asked to detail the family's activities on the night of the abduction. Mormon families are supposed to have family prayer every day, either in the morning, or before bedtime. This is not unusual. It was the reporter who picked out this detail to report, not the Smart family.
To: ItsTheMediaStupid
Leaving the garage door open by mistake certainly doesn't necessarily mean the father is to blame; agreed, we've all done it. We tend to read things too fast and miss the part about Mr. Smart telling the police the next day about the door. He didn't wait for ten days to do it. But the question still remains - if this really was a stranger abduction, how did he get in? The window is an unlikely entrance. Could he have slithered in the garage and laid in wait for several hours? A stranger? If so, why?
To: Rodney King
I think all the weirdness can be explained by looking at this as a HOSTAGE situation. The police are tightly controling information that goes out to the public, and possibly even puting out false information, because they need to locate where she is being held and rescue her without spooking the perp into killing her and running.
I think it would be wise if everyone waited till this was over and all the facts are out.

Scottish-style golf hat Your average run of the mill kidnapper of children usually wear Scottish Style golf hats.

What is with all you people who want to believe the worst about this poor family? That's not it at all. We are simply aware of the fact that stranger abudcutions are rare. Especially home invasion stranger abductions. Especially ones where there are no signs of entry.

This is Jon Benet Part II I'm afraid and we may never find out what happened to that girl. But her family knows. You can be damn sure of that. Agreed. I still think it's the uncle.
