Good-Bye Cruel Free Republic
6-16-02 | wasfree

Posted on 06/16/2002 5:32:24 AM PDT by magnum opus dejure

Well, it's been 4 years since I first found Free Republic. I have always felt like I belonged here and have really enjoyed the banter back and forth between us members. I am afraid all this is now over. I am really suprised and shocked at it's suddenness. Before I leave I want to thank a freeper from Michigan who sent me a DVD player last year to give to my kids for Christmas. You reaffirmed my faith in humanity.

I know this thread will be deleted before many people get to read it, but I just can't go without saying a final word. Every since 911 the 'vibe' here at FR has been decidedly hostile. I guess it was a matter of time before the newbie moderator got around to weeding me out for my sometimes unpopular views. So I join the ranks of A+Bert and so many others who gave FR a interesting flavor. I will miss coming here 20 times a day and keeping up on things. But without posting priviledges there is just no point. I must go find another conservative group to try to be a part of.

In the future, when a freeper who has been a loyal member since August 1998 crosses the line, how about a note instead of banning? Would that have been too much? I may have gotten out of line, how is beyond me, but if such a tresspass would have been pointed out I would gladly have refrained from doing so again. It is just not right to just ban an account with no explaination. Especially when the freeper has been here 4 years. I have no idea what I am going to do with my days now that I no longer have FR. Well, I guess I have said my part. It is a sad day when one has to leave family and friends. I feel like some of you were just that. But apparently I am no longer wanted around here. I bid my good day to you all and hope that karma pays it's respects to those who do injustice.

formal War ~~ Against what country?

Well, Taliban Afghanistan, for a start. No stupid red-tape about "detainees" to have to mess with; they would simply be P.O.W.s. Simple. Direct. No questions.

AFTER Afghanistan? I dunno. You tell me.

"President Bush now has the challenge to do something equally courageous and wise. This is necessary if we expect to avert a catastrophic World War III. When the President asks for patience as he and his advisors deliberate, seeking a course of action, all Americans should surely heed his request. Mr. Speaker, I support President Bush and voted for the authority and the money to carry out his responsibility to defend this country ..." --Ron Paul

See #956, cross-reference #925.

Ron Paul did vote to authorize the use of military force WITHOUT a declaration of war

Watch him spin and squirm.

As a U.S. citizen, Padilla usually would be afforded traditional legal rights such as presumption of innocence until a conviction.

Padilla, however, has been classified an "enemy combatant," or "unlawful combatant." It means that he has fewer legal rights than an ordinary civilian defendant in a criminal case.

Classification arose from Nazi saboteurs

For example, Padilla may be held indefinitely without being charged until the U.S.-declared war against terrorism ends, said John McGinnis, professor of constitutional law at Northwestern Law School in Chicago.

The designation also allows U.S. authorities to interrogate the suspect in a more aggressive fashion, and restrict his access to an attorney, McGinnis said.

The U.S. Supreme Court defined an "enemy combatant" or "unlawful combatant" in a World War II case called Ex Parte Quirin. In a 1942 decision, the court confirmed the authority of Congress and the president to try Nazi terrorists operating in the United States by military commissions.

No need. When we refused a transfer of Bin Laden to a "neutral" country, the Taliban declared war ON US. This war is using the precedent set by the Barbary Pirates war and it is the ONLY rational model to follow.

If I thought he had actually taken up arms against the USA,

He did,or he wouldn't have been wounded in the fighting to retake the fort. You can bet he wasn't running around in the open unarmed while the shooting was going on. His fellow Taliban soldiers would have killed him themselves.

We all need our little dreams. Mine is sticking all liberal professors on an island to survive on their own al la "Lord of the Flies". I first plant little video cameras all over so the world can watch......

That might be off topic but I plead that I am not sure what the topic of this thread is any more.

If you are interested in mercenaries you should read "Someone Else's War" By Anthony Rogers. Very readable and a good overview on how mercenaries have been used in the past 40 years.

How important are the lives of thousands of innocent American civilians when compared with the opportunity to misrepresent and attack the actions of this administration?

I would hope nobody would give any President a blank check, and I certainly didn't make the claim the Ron Paul did.

You posted a link to a tinfoiler website titled "On Bush's Illegal Undeclared War: Congressman Ron Paul, 10-29-2001" and you said " Unless I am mistaken, Congressman Ron Paul did NOT authorize any "war". I'm just pointing out that you are mistaken, That's all, not any claims of blank checks. If Ron Paul voted for the use of military force, he can hardly condemn the President for using the powers Congress granted him.

It seems to me that there are a lot of folks around this thread who are using the US and FR in the way Congresscritter Bishop used that cup on the plane. I am beginning to find it ever more sickening.
