S.C. Governor Sends Troopers to Borders to Stop Government Shipments of Plutonium
Atlanta Journal Constitution ^ | 6/15/02 | Associated Press

Posted on 06/14/2002 2:38:51 PM PDT by DoveTurnedHawk

Gov. Jim Hodges ordered state troopers and other authorities to South Carolina's borders Friday to stop government shipments of plutonium that could begin arriving from Colorado as early as this weekend.

[snip]

But Hodges has said he fears the government will end up leaving the plutonium permanently in South Carolina, making the state a tempting target for terrorists.

Hodges, a Democrat who is up for re-election in the fall, has been threatening for weeks to use state troopers to block roads into the Savananna River Site and has vowed to lie down in the road if necessary to stop the plutonium-carrying trucks.

Too bad that the sum'bitch worked to remove the Confederate flag from atop the state house. Even though we've had Plutonium in the state for the last 50 years, I would've supported him, just to thumb our noses at the Federal government.

BTW==our State troopers still wear Confederate Grey uniforms...I'd love to have a gov. to tell the Federal Judge, "We'll, it's gonna be your marshalls against my troopers and national guard. BTW, our Air National Guard has F16 Falcon's." I can dream, can't I?"

Appreciate the further info.

The WORD/Ralph Bristoe (sp?) debate between Peeler and Sanford was very informative.
Both candidates have strong and weak points.
Peeler should not have gotten on Sanford for his vote against enlarging government under the guise of homeland security. Sanford did see through it and saw it was pork and gov't expansion.

But Peeler has a better plan for reducing taxes. Sanford wants to immediately add a five cent per gallon gas tax before cutting anything. That goes completely against his voting record (?).

Sanford's proposal to add educational 'regency boards' is gov't expansion. Peeler is rightfully against it.
Sanford came across sort of confusing. Peeler sometimes majored on the minor.

I wish Ralph had asked Sanford about his McCain connections and had asked him to explain.

There is already a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant next to the Savannah River site that was built in the 70s by Allied Gulf at a cost of something like 800 million (70s cost) to tax payers. Jimmy Carter would not allow it to be licensed to operate after it was built.

Lets say for instance they bring a truck into South Carolina ,what is the Highway Patrol going to do with it? Confiscate it.Well then they will have to store it so where will it go.This is just another ploy to make some lawyers rich before Jim leaves office.I have not in my lifetime seen so many lawyers since the Clintons moved into DC.We all now need one to cross the street and even then without a little political support all you do is waste your money but the lawyer still gets paid.Lawyers are putting the squeeze on this country and we are letting it get out of hand. You know I was always taught that court was about justice but as Shakespeare once said "All the world is a stage" or maybe that was Bill Clinton I really dont know for sure. But I do know for sure court is nowhere close to being about justice,it is about manipulating the system and lying. We need to revamp the court system in this country and go to looking for the truth not making up lies to defend people. The American way of life should not be dictated through the courts advesarily because we are too diverse. That is why we are having so many problems today.America was founded on Christian Principles and after she was established those coming in have changed this principles.America is no longer America we are hundreds of nationalities that are splintering and that will lead to our downfall. Must I remind you "A house divided cannot stand" and we are a long way from being a nation not divided and the more lawyers that become involved the more divided we become.

Withhold funding to SC until they elect someone who realizes that we all have to do our part.

" Extensive research has shown the increase in numbers of cancers, and birth defects, as well as, a myriad of other health problems associated with the processing, transportation, and storage of radio active materials."

Only in circumstances where modern safety procedures were not followed. To make that claim about processing, transportation, and storage in general is misleading.

If you really want to get a look at the contamination left behind as the result of nuclear weapons research and production -- do a search for FUSRAP Sites DOE. You can look at the areas one site at a time. My argument is that they have killed more people in this country as a result of the contamination here than they killed with the two atomic bombs in world war two.

After you check the sites, follow up with health issues in that specific area. Fallon, Nevada had a cluster of leukemia cases in an elementary school there. Yes, that turned out to be on the FUSRAP list. I was following another case in a high school in upstate New York where there were several cases of testicular cancer, as well as, other types of cancer. That community proved to be on th list too.

My argument is not that we should compromise our national security, but is with the excesses in the industry that are destroying our planet and feeding the politicians, lobbyists, arms manufacturers feeding at the trough.

Well, I checked and Fallon NV isn't on any Fusrap list.
Hell, I used to live in Fallon and the only thing there is mosquitos, casinos, bordellos and a lot of government firing ranges littered with exploded and unexploded ordinance.
(I exaggerate, I kinda liked the town.)

I suggest you get a new database program to get your urban myths properly organized.

If there is one thing the feds have reasonable responsibility over, it is nukes. This governor is going way too far.

More people were killed as the result of coal originating lung disease than by nukes.

This whole situation is about political power and money. Years ago, North Carolina, and several other states signed an agreement to take on nuclear waste for a designated period of time, after which the new waste would shift to a site in another state. The NC legislature has blocked funding a site, and even the site proposed or discussed was a mile or so from the SC border on a major watershed that heads into Myrtle Beach. So, the Feds and other states have all reneged on their commitments, yet SC is being told to shut up and take the hazardous waste. I disagree with Hodges on many things but this BS has to stop.

"I do find it somewhat interesting, though, that the French use more nuclear power, per capita, than any other nation, and yet they are one of the most rabidly "green" nations of Western Civilization."

A very good argument can be made that nuclear energy is amongst the most environmentally-friendly energy sources...it's just that the Enviro-whackos have spent decades demonizing the industry in America.

Why should South Carolina be forced to warehouse more than 1/50th of the federal radiocative waste? Split it into fifty even pieces, and let every state have a share in the headache.

Fallon is on my FUSRAP list which I acquired by going directly to DOE Headquarters and having it mailed to me. At the time I became interested, didn't have the technology to retrieve it from the internet. Maybe you have a revised list, mine is the original.
