Moroccan Women Arrested

Europe Braced For Terror Attacks
Bomb Suspect Born In New York

Morocco has arrested the wives of two detained Saudi men accused of plotting "terrorist attacks" on US and British ships in the Gibraltar Straits, a security official has said.

The two women were arrested 24 hours ago and are being interrogated with their husbands and a third Saudi national for "criminal acts", the official who declined to be named said.

"The two young women were apparently married to Saudi nationals preparing terrorist attacks in the Mediterranean... They were aware of what the men were doing," the official said, but he declined to give their age and names.

'Couriers'

Women were allegedly used as couriers between al Qaeda, the Islamic group which Washington holds responsible for the September 11 attacks on the United States, and its members in Morocco, the official said.

Late on Monday a senior government official said three Saudi men aged between 25 and 35 were arrested and accused of preparing "terrorist" attacks on NATO targets, including US and British warships.

The move comes after three male suspects were arrested in the country for allegedly plotting suicide attacks against British and American warships.

Moroccan police say the men were planning attacks on ships crossing the straits of Gibraltar.

A security official, who refused to give his name, said: "Morocco's security services have dismantled a network of al Qaeda who planned terrorist attacks on US and British warships crossing the Straits of Gibraltar.

Suicide attack

The official said the three men, holding Saudi passports, were arrested in Morocco last month. He declined to name them but said they were aged between 25 and 35.

He said the men planned to sail small dinghies carrying explosives into the Straits of Gibraltar.

The official said they were planning an attack similar to the raid on the US warship Cole while it was refuelling off Yemen in 2000.

Washington blamed that suicide attack, which killed 19 sailors, on al Qaeda.

The arrest of the three Saudi nationals follows the arrest of an American citizen for conspiring to build a so called nuclear dirty bomb, which could have been detonated in Washington.

Let's wash out hands of the whole, frickin', sand-flea-infested mess over there and get our oil elsewhere.

Throw the Palestenians a few extra parking lots and strip plazas.

Build a big-arse wall around Israel

and then let all the rest of the 12th century tribes riot and rot to their heart's content.

But, but, the Saudis...they're our FRIENDS, right? Yeah, riigghhtt! NO MORE VISAS, NO MORE LETTING THEIR PLANES LAND IN THE U.S. WITHOUT INVESTIGATING EVERYONE ON THEM. Time to revolt, America.

Whats with the Saudi's?

They lost 8 -0 to Germany, 1 - 0 to Cameroon and 3 - 0 to Ireland, and are returning to Riyadh in disgrace, having allowed foreign women observe their naked legs.

...holding Saudi passports,...

I think it is time that Bush gives his speech again that a country is either on the side of civilization and against terrorists or its will be considered an enemy and a terrorist country.

The Saudi government seems to have no interest in preventing terrorists from using their country (and passports) as a base. The US lead coalition invaded Afghanistan because that country's government was not interested in finding and turning over terrorists.

The Saudi's better start controlling their citizens! This US citizen feels that the royal house of Saud, should be held responsible for the actions of its subjects/citizens! I also feel that the US military may be the best means of getting the Saudi government to meet the requirements of a "civilized country." I was at ground zero in NYC two months after the WTC collapse and have no tolerance for terrorist sympathizers.

I thought al Qaeda hated women. Funny giving them this kind of responsibility.

I wonder what young Saudi men were doing in Morocco. Could they have been working in a mosque or a religious charity?

Buying our oil elsewhere doesn't change anything. The price will still be dependent upon the worldwide supply and demand. If we don't buy Saudi oil (which we already don't buy that much -- it's less than 10% of our supply), someone else in the Western world will. Why? Because it's the cheapest oil in the world to extract. The Saudis are the Wal-Mart of the oil world - lowest costs.

Increasing US production is a great idea, but it will take time, it will mostly be higher cost, and it still may not be enough to meet our demand -- even if we reserve it 100% for US usage. That also wouldn't help the rest of the world. And while it's nice to dream of economic isolation, it would devastate the US economy -- who would buy our goods and services? The increased costs of many goods would hit consumers hard -- and that's everyone (except for perhaps the dead voters in North Philadelphia).

Alternative power sources also would take time. So none of that helps in the immediate crisis. Worse, a US withdrawal will display weakness to the Islamic world. They will be encouraged and increase their efforts against the US to continue distracting their subjects.

I think a better idea is to split up Saudi Arabia. Overthrow the House of Saud and take over the oil fields. Either create a Shiite nation in East Arabia (the people who live where the oil is located are not Wahabbi and were conquered by the House of Saud) OR run it as a US protectorate where basic freedoms are guaranteed (the value of the oil would more than pay the cost of all US military operations in the Middle East -- and it would give us a hold on the Euros). Mecca and Medina could be placed under Turkish control again. Wahabbi fanatacism would lose it's prestigious hold on the holy cities and it's financing in one swoop.

Weird.

It makes no sense, either.

The Gilbratar Straits are many miles wide ... You CAN'T make any effective attack (on a ship ateaming through at least) without already either being out there in a boat with a BIG missile launcher (a little RPG or Stinger is only going to dent the metal!), or a torpedo boat, or in a kamakazi-style high-speed cigaretta boat fast enough to get to ramming speed suddenly.

And even then, you can get blown out of the water before you get close to a destroyer or armed auxiliary. (Passenger boat/Cruise boat would be different. Big merchant ship (2" thick steel sides) isn't going to be harmed very much by anything smaller than a 10,000 bomb.

So what's up with the story?

Now, if they were going to launch 20 or 30 RPG's from foxholes dug in the sand from the shore while the destroyer was in the Suez Canal ..... THAT might be a threat I'd worry about.

Len, you get the 'Big-Brain' award. 'Course, so do I, but Mecca and Medina would be giant glass ashtrays under my plan...........FRegards
