Denny's black staff allegedly discriminated
The Charleston Post and Courier ^ | June 9, 2002 | AP

ANDERSON S.C. - An Upstate man has sued Denny's for discrimination, saying black workers laced his eggs with bug spray because he wore clothing with Confederate emblems.

Eric Stephens said for five months, black employees at one of the restaurant company's Anderson locations made him and his friends wait for more than an hour for a table, served them burnt food and contaminated their eggs with bug spray, according to the lawsuit.

A spokeswoman for Denny's described the lawsuit as "outlandish and "frivolous."

Exactly, and the job of policing the franchise owners falls to Denny's Management.

The worst thing a franchise food chain can do is allow it's franchise owners to destroy the brand. It's like a cancer that spreads and taints all of the locations to some extent, even the well run restrauants.

McDonalds is particularly vigilant. A Big Mac tastes the same in Cleveland as it does in Miami. Denny's could take a lesson from their consistency. From what I see now, eating at Denny's now is something of a crapshoot.

It's hard to determine what's beef and what's road kill.

This is sick!

Tell you what. If subsequent investigations prove this to be true and deliberate, charges for attempted murder against the offender should be filed immediately.

Imagine if it were the other way around. What would happen then?

Oh c'mon, dare to answer your own question. I think you know exactly what would happen: that same fire-breathing spokesman would come out, just as unassuming and sheepishly as you please, using phrases like "deeply regretting" any "offense" to the aggreived black customers and stressing how they pride themselves on a "diverse" workforce. Then they would decline to contest the matter in court, opting instead for a fat check-writing session and the hiring of some "racial sensitivity" consultant!

Until these corporate empty suits, who will fight tooth and nail any regulations on labor, the environment, et cetera, cease to be a herd of invertebrates around the "civil rights" racketeers, I will find it difficult to feel sorry for them.

The service is lousy, the food is lousy, and as far as I'm concerned, there are enough Cracker Barrels and Waffle Houses out on the road to eliminate the need to ever stop at Denny's.

Tell me about it. I was at one with some friends when I lived in Dayton, and our waiter was high. He kept getting our orders wrong, and seemed to be in a complete daze.

We all got up and left - we were scared to see what our orders were going to look like.

At another Denny's in downtown Dayton, the place was filled up with some very loud blacks. In walked a bunch of white bikers, and there was trash talking back and forth. We got the hell out of there.

I have written Denny's off of my list. Cracker Barrel is the place to go. They are also being sued by the NAACP, so I make it a point to support them.

Restaurants with open kitchens tend to be better. Something about the customers being able to see the cooks keeps things clean and prevents unsanitary food from leaving the kitchen.

Hahaha... Not the place I go to, dude... Those hardcore kitchen dudes just don't GIVE a flying rat's a$$...

In addition, the clientele is like something from the local zoo.

That's how our local Denny's(s) are too...Most of ours have become hangouts for the gays and goth freaks. They can have it as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, but there is nothing quite as entertaiuning as a DENNY'S parking lot around 3:00 AM (or whenever the bars close where you are). It's better than the circus, two carnival freak shows and a live taping of "America's Most Wanted"!!

The food is bad, though, and the service is so awful that you have to laugh about it.

The book I was referring to above is "KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL", by Chef Anthony Bourdain.

This book alone will make you reconsider that nice meal out at a restaurant- and he was writing about some of the better restaurants around (3-Star and up)!

At the very least, resist ordering anything that could contain scraps from other diners tables (meatloaf, chicken croquettes, bread pudding, the list goes on...). And NEVER order fish on a Tuesday!

BTW, how do you know when you go somewhere to eat if they employ black people in the kitchen or not? Do you ask them?

Mr. S2R works as a restaurant manager, and if someone tampered with the food, he could be charged with a crime.

I was in the business when I was young, too. Rude or abusive customers were handled by managers, and if they were really the bad customer type, were barred. Anyone in a kitchen who spit on the food or adulterated it in any way as revenge for customer rudeness or for any other reason was apt to be fired and the word would circulate among local managers about the employee's action.

Anybody who would spit on someone's food instead of either ignoring their bad behavior or getting the manager to handle it is too immature to be working with the public, IMO. That was also the prevailing attitude among the people I worked with back then, too.

I never eat at Denny's, the last three "Cracker Barrels" I ate at were the pits. I like "Waffle House" - the best grits around.

Denny's does not discriminate against anyone. Everybody get the same lousy service and food, regardless of ethnicity.
