SAN DIEGO (AP) -- An American Airlines pilot faces misdemeanor charges for toting a loaded gun in his carry-on baggage while trying to board a plane at the San Diego airport.

William F. Blaylock told authorities he uses the gun for hunting and personal protection and had forgotten to remove it from his bag before heading to Lindbergh Field on April 23.

The weapon was detected during airport security screening.

On Friday, prosecutors filed two misdemeanor charges against Blaylock who, if convicted, faces up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. He has been free on bond since April 24 and will be arraigned next week.

The airline wouldn't comment.

I used to fly with a Bill Blaylock when I was in the Navy in San Diego. Wonder if it is the same guy?

"Boy, you in a heapa trouble!"

He should have pointed out that he's the pilot and he could just crash the plane if he wanted to.

I regularly took my toy collection to the American Shooting Center on Ruffin Rd. Now I play outdoors at my range in Idaho. A local gunshop is planning to build an indoor facility. That will be real nice on winter days with temps in the teens and constant 30 MPH winds. It's hard to shoot in that kind of weather.

What kind of hunting weapon can you put in a carry on piece of luggage?

I recommend this.

Also works well against two legged varmints: To quote Lynrd Skynrd: I'm tellin' you son, well it ain't no fun, starin straight down a .44

Annie, I took my .454 to the FReeper BBQ the Libs at Burro Canyon. The .454 and the S&W 629 did a fine job of making those bowling pins dance. The folks in this pic will probably remember the noisy little beast. The skinny guy on the tailgate isn't me. I spent the rest of the day "shooting" with a less noisy Sony DSC-S30. My best "target" of the day is below.

From the right Mercuria, Alan Chapman, feinswinesucksass, HangFire and I think dalereed. I don't know if the young lady is an active FReeper or not. JimRob in the foreground.

That has already been op-checked by a US Airways captain. He landed in a small room with steel bars. Common sense does not prevail on this issue. Funny, that we are worried about someone taking control of an aircraft, yet the the very people we pay to control aircraft, are the ones being frisked for implements designed to take control.

WTFO?Anyone listening? BTW, Maneta is a moron, as well as the numbnuts that appointed that creep.

I shot a centerfire bullseye match one evening with my S&W 629 with a 4 inch barrel. I used full power 240 gr JHP PMC 44 Mag factory ammo. I had forgotten that the first target was to be fired single handed at 25 yards. Ouch. Only 25 points. The pain in my wrist was matched by the psychological impact of that 44 magnum going BOOM when most everyone else was shooting puffball 38SPL. Target #2 was two handed at 25 yards. That scored 77 points. The rest of the targets fell in the 92 to 97 point range. I promised never to do that again. I still placed #5 out of 20 participants that night in spite of the terrible first target score.

That's why I like the Anaconda: the porting and barrel weight (8") definitely help. It's no .22, though...

But what about the "Rule of Law". Shouldn't this criminal be locked up?

Sorry for my smart a** remark. I misread your sarcasm. (I think it was sarcasm)

"Boy, you in a heapa trouble!"

The name does sound familiar. And, as you can see, I stay in a heapa . . . . !

Hope to see ya in a couple weeks.

Bottom line for me:
I want the pilots to be able to have a readily available sidearm on their person while in the cockpit.

"...Yeah, personally I'd like to see the pilots of all airlines call a strike over the issue--all at once. That would get everyone's attention..."

If I were a commercial pilot there's no way I would put up with a leftist political agenda that denied me the right to have at hand the only tool with which might (effectively) resist being hijacked.

Not after 9-11. No way, No how.

As the communists who read our propaganda ration are so fond of saying: "This changes everything."

And I wouldn't tolerate, for a New York second, the shabby treatment that has been reported to be now being directed toward flight crews by that motley rabble of low-rent village idiots laughingly referred to as 'screeners'.

I'd ferry Cessna 172's to paint shops before I put up with any of the dangerous and unacceptable lunacy that these strangely docile commercial pilots are submitting to.

Pilots I know are NOT for arming.

Pilots I know ARE for arming. Maybe because they already are armed and have concealed carry permits.

Guess the pilots I know grew up with guns and feel comfortable with them, shooting snakes and coyotes, etc. Your pilots must be city boys.

Well, guess what? The city boys don't have to carry; it's a voluntary program.

"...Seems to me we would all be REALLY SAFE if we did the United States Constitution thingie and, if we felt like it, were all armed!..."

Of course.

"...Oh -- and if none of the new-style low-bidder pilots were quota hires and pilot-costumed computer-gamers..."

Yeah. There are multiple layers of problems here.

I'm going to 'Just Say No' to commercial aviation, for myself (and anyone else that I can influence) until they get it right.

"...If this guy gets convicted/fined/jailed the ALPA union should strike. Shut the country's skies down for a week or two and get Congress off their collective asses to arm the pilots..."

No argument here.

I can do without flying (standing on my head) until they get it right. And there are plenty of others who are slowly but surely becoming as dogmatic about it as I am. With each passing day more and more people are growing increasingly frustrated with insane levels of delay, inconvenience and outrageous mistreatment.

They are beginning to weigh their options, from 'driving' to my personal favorite, simply 'not going'.

And the hard-core road warriors who've convinced themselves that they must fly, no matter what, simply aren't a large enough number to keep the airlines in business, at least at today's ticket price structure.

It isn't complicated...

The airlines have a limited window of opportunity here. If they don't get their minds right, and begin to flex their muscle accordingly, they will suffer losses that will require decades to recoup.

A pilot does not need a gun to fly the plane whereever he want to fly it.

If the american people are worried that a pilot may fly the plane where he wants to, then instead of prohibiting pilots from guns, we should requier a new device installed in planes that automatically set off poison gas in the cockpit, and then automatically turns on the automatic pilot if any plane veers from its course.

there's no need for that. we already have f-16's with aim-9's for that contingency.
