A day in the life of President Bush (photos); 6/6/02

In what can be called a massive restructuring and combining of government agencies, President Bush addressed the country this evening and outlined his proposal for elevating the Department of Homeland Security to a cabinet position. In this new cabinet position, the following agencies will be consolidated into one mission, homeland security: the Coast Guard, the Border Patrol, the Customs Service, Immigration officials, the Transportation Security Administration, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In addition to sharing information among all of these different agencies, the Department of Homeland Defense will be charged with four tasks:

1. To control our borders and prevent terrorists and explosives from entering our country.

2. To work with state and local authorities to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies.

3. To bring together our best scientists to develop technologies that detect biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons, and to discover the drugs and treatments to best protect our citizens.

4. To review intelligence and law enforcement information from all agencies of government, and produce a single daily picture of threats against our homeland. Analysts will be responsible for imagining the worst, and planning to counter it.

The President urged Americans to call their representatives and encourage them to support the plan. Enjoy your daily dose of Dubya!

**To my total delight, the WHOLE weekend was humidity free. I walked all over the place with no problem. When I got back home here in the north, I took one step out of the airport and melted. HUMIDITY! **

Yep. Folks don't realize that we actually have humidity in the Northern Cal areas. Good for the skin...but can't give the excuse of a *dry heat*. :o)

As I read the text of W's speech (thanks to Wphile's link), by the second paragraph my thoughts were not so much on the speech but on how much dem blather and whining we are going to hear depending on how W handled this with the whinebabies before showtime. If W fully explored his plan with them (I don't know how he handles this), then I would expect them to be armed and ready and insidiously leaking unsourced things against it quickly in the aftermath of his presentation. If he didn't explore / explain it fully, they would be armed and ready and whining that he kept them in the dark.

So, ... IF he told them first, and somehow nailed their tongues into the Great Wall of State Secrecy, that'll be about A Major Event. It's shocking that we Americans should even have to be worrying about the Congressional leaders on this front.

"Don't you love having a Harvard MBA in the Oval Office?"

Not only is he a Harvard MBA, but he grew up in Midland, TX. That makes him outgoing, friendly, tough, quick, and decisive all at the same time. I once worked for a Stanford MBA who grew up in Midland, TX and he was an excellent, decisive manager. (Bonus GWB Joke: "If Al Gore invented the internet, why do all the internet addresses start with WWW ?")

But this time he has their queen and it's checkmate.

Hmmmm ... trying to figure out which one exactly is their queen. They ALL seem to fit!

I have good news for you. In Wphile's Barney & Friends tape she's circulating in the Dose library, a reporter from one of the morning newsie shows on the pets stated that Barney IS now allowed in the OO. I interpret that to mean he is now fully housebroken. He still doesn't get into the meetings, though, because he chews on George Tenet's shoes and distracts Condi.

BARF ALERT

.

.

.

Check out this photo caption on Yahoo, from Reuters:

Bowing to pressure from Congress, President Bush on June 6, 2002 proposed creating a new Cabinet department to protect the United States by harnessing the scores of agencies that are responsible for homeland security. Bush ... proposed creating a Department of Homeland Security drawing from eight existing Cabinet agencies and dozens of other offices. (Hyungwon Kang/Reuters)

Actually, Reuters' pawn's words sound kind of funny juxtaposed with Feinstein's wailing that they should have been consulted.

So I guess we know who W trusts. hahahahahahahahhaha

how does he keep it up

He described himself as someone who "goes a hundred miles an hour," adding that Laura's reassuring calm was important to someone like him.

In case no one replied yet (I haven't read from 206 to the end), they have India (black cat) at the WH but they gave or lent another cat that has its claws to a friend in California. Can't remember his name but I think his first name started with B and his last name with F, like Brad Freeman or some such (very bad guess, I'm sure). California kitty soon ran away but was recovered safely.

Hmmmmm...guess I didn't phrase that right! When I said, "here in the north," I meant New York State right across from Canada. Hey, we have grapes here too. They come in cute little boxes and we call them raisins.

who could have formulated this plan and kept it from even the closest advisors to the President.
My guess ..... Dick Cheney!

Tom and Dick, I suspect. (Nice that W has his own Tom & Dick team.) Look at that Thinker chugging away.

I see that I'm all alone holding down the fort, having gotten to the Dose quite late. But it's been nice reading everyone's input, even in the gloom of solitude. ;-)

My guess ..... Dick Cheney!

I think so, too. Remember the shortened transition period that this administration was handed by the election 'contest.' I never heard one commentator offer one word of praise for the great job Cheney did with that. The Bush administration's first year was so far superior in every respect to the Clinton's that none of the media ho's want to call any attention to a comparison.
