Tight border controls are no longer an insult to our national spirit of liberty; they are the guarantor of it.Worth repeating.
Again and again 'till the open borders multi-culti ninnies get it thru their thick skulls.

There is now, as there has never been before, a plain trade-off between restricting the immigration rights of foreigners and reducing the liberties of citizens. A new, stricter interpretation of the 14th Amendment's citizenship clause, or INS surveillance of maternity wards? An end to "family reunification" chain immigration, or swelling welfare dependency paid for with oppressive taxation? A bar on any immigration from certain unfriendly nations, or more intrusive and cumbersome security procedures at airports, malls, national parks? An overall reduction in all immigration, or further assaults on the lives and property of citizens by rogue aliens because an overburdened INS cannot do the necessary checking? Tight border controls are no longer an insult to our national spirit of liberty; they are the guarantor of it.This is something that many ordinary Americans have thought about for a long time, but it never gets discussed by the elites in our country. Congratulations to John Derbyshire for saying it in plain english at a web site where many influential people will see it.

This is an outstanding article and it deserves to be widely "pinged", so if any of you can think of someone to notify, you should do so ASAP.

Thanks for the 'Ping', Madfly.
Great post, xsysmgr. I wish all Americans, that were born here, had 1% of this new American's understanding of the dilemma our country faces.
That goes double for our RINO President and that gullible libertarian, Ziglar, that's in charge of the INS.

Ho hum...These are the same arguments that were being made a hundred years ago as America was flooded by the "swarthy" Southern Europeans who practiced strange forms of Christianity and spoke stranger languages and ate even stranger foods, while flooding the factories with cheap labor infuriating the unionists...etc.
Derbyshire usually has some interesting points to share but this article is...well... so repetitive and simplistic. Immigration should not be about race but Derbyshire pretty much wants a free pass on race whe it comes to who gets in to America. Strange isn't it that not one word is mentioned about security! And yet immigration policy should be about security. That means that NO ideological Muslims need apply! And that means that those seeking refuge from oppressive nations - mostly Muslim but still a few Communist ones namely Cuba - should be welcomed here. I have personally dealt with thousands of immigrants and they are generally more patriotic than native born Americans - all except for the recent (last ten years or so) of Muslims from wherever.

we have considerably less time to sort out a rational immigration policy. Perhaps we should at least start talking about it.Yes, we certainly should. And the talk should be totally frank, without the politically correct absurdity that it is somehow wrong for people to prefer their own kith and kin to others. The Leftist denial of normal patterns of human identification has long since reached socially pathological levels. I can think of no rational basis for anyone to continue to defer to their absurd bias, against all past human experience, on this subject.
Let us discuss Immigration, and space, and the nature of settlement; and how different human stocks respond to situations that are important to Americans. Let us do so without rancour or hostility towards anyone but the Leftist demagogues and the dysrons who support them; but let us put a stop to the disintegration of the social order. (See Immigration & The America Future.)

A very interesting article and analogy, particularly coming from a recently naturalized immigrant.
