WOW--here's a quote from the past!

"We have a young woman who by all --
all the reports was, you know, one
of those quality folks that you run into,
who is out lost now and missing."

--Mike Lynch, while in Seattle WA

I remember Sylvia Brown saying the body was definately in the park. I thought, at the time, she was full of crap, a charlatan guessing the obvious. Then the body didn't appear and she stuck to her story.

So she is probably still full of crap, but a good guesser.

"When I was in Florida last week, visiting close friends, they seem to be stuck in the "No News Zone," preferring to watch game shows all day long."

Its amazing how many people are in the ostrich mode. I have close friends, mostly female, who will turn the TV to another channel if they hear anything at all that has to do with terrorism or any type of violence. The worst part about all of this is I would be willing to bet they are not in the minority.

Could someone refresh my memory about one of the 'psychic predictions' that said Chandra's body was near a stream of water?

Practically *every* psychic (excuse me, "charlatan") uses the old "near water" prediction whenever they're purporting to "see" where someone/something is located.

This is one of the tritest tricks of the trade, and was old and gray *long* before Chandra ever disappeared.

The reason they use it is because damned near *everything* is "near water" of one form or another -- it's one of those "can hardly miss" predictions which helps make the "prediction" sound eerily accurate.

No location is very far from a creek, river, pond, or drainage ditch. If by some chance the real location turns out not to be, the psychic can still claim a "match" if the location is within a couple hundred yards of a water tower, horse watering trough, fire hydrant, bathroom, swimming pool, boat store, etc. etc. In one famous case reporters asserted that a "near water" prediction was accurate because the location was a building with blue walls...

For descriptions of this and other tricks that "psychics" use to appear more accurate than the fakers that they actually are, see: If psychics are frauds, why do police keep asking them for help?

It's downright scary, isn't it? I mean, these people are educated. The worst part is, they seem perfectly will to take MY interpretation of everything. If I told them to vote for Nader, they would!

'Cos usually the paper mails, as a courtesy, a copy or clipping of a published letter-to-the-editor to the author.

WHERE do you live, Sarah? I've lived all over the country and worked at more than one newspaper and written hundreds of Letters to the Editor, and I have never heard of this practice. These days newspapers think that just publishing your letter is courtesy enough. They don't even return photos any more, or apologize if they cut the point out of your letter.

My wife has always turned the channel whenever the news comes on.

It's not because she wants to be uninformed -- she asks about current events when she talks to her friends (and me).

The real reason she avoids TV/radio news like the plague is because she can't stand to see all the stupidity in the world. It pisses her off.

Her voice drives ME nuts. She makes a whistling sound when she pronounces her "esses".

Yes she does. Like Jack Lemmon, when he broke his tooth in "The Out of Towners"!

Occasionally, I will do this myself. It's so easy to overload on information, sometimes you just have to take a break from it. I get updates on Fox & Friends before I go to work, and I figure if anything REALLY earth-shattering happens, like another terrorist attack in the US, they'll interrupt regular programming to tell me. But sometimes you just need to take a break and get some mindless entertainment.
