'Cos usually the paper mails, as a courtesy, a copy or clipping of a published letter-to-the-editor to the author.

WHERE do you live, Sarah? I've lived all over the country and worked at more than one newspaper and written hundreds of Letters to the Editor, and I have never heard of this practice. These days newspapers think that just publishing your letter is courtesy enough. They don't even return photos any more, or apologize if they cut the point out of your letter.
