India warns US it may be about to attack Pakistan
Hindustani Times ^ | 5/17/02 | Saurabh Shukla

Posted on 05/17/2002 5:32:26 PM PDT by TheConservator

Home Minister LK Advani's expression of "deep disappointment" with the US in Parliament was matched by tough language to US Ambassador Robert Blackwill behind closed doors.

In meetings on Friday with National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra and Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh, Blackwill was told the US had failed to fulfil promises to restrain Pakistan from supporting terrorism. India, therefore, would take "appropriate action". A similar message was given to US Secretary of State Colin Powell when he spoke to Singh earlier.

Blackwill's assurances that the US saw the fight against Kashmir militancy as part of the global war on terrorism received a sceptical response.

India said Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf had done nothing concrete to rein in terrorists — despite US promises to the contrary. India showed evidence that cross-border terrorism had increased after Pakistan pledged to fight terror.

Blackwill's request for more time to get Pakistan to comply was rejected.

Blackwill expressed US President George W Bush's concerns about tensions escalating into a full-scale war. India, he was told, would not take rash decisions but as a sovereign country it reserved the right to act on its security needs. India was urged not to break diplomatic relations with Pakistan.

Following these exchanges, there was a ratcheting up of diplomatic activity in the city.

Blackwill and senior US embassy officials reviewed the situation late into the night and consulted with Washington. There was speculation that besides Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, expected in South Asia in the next fortnight, Powell may also fly here.

I guranatee if China tries to take advantage of this situation against India the US will be drawn in, in about 2 seconds in order to prevent India from feeling the need to use nukes.

In that case I am very glad that I live on the east coast, out of range of Chinese nukes (China has publicly gloated about the way LA, SF, and Seatle are targeted by their missiles this very minute.)

It's not keeping Musharef in power. He was quite popular before we arrived. In fact our insistence upon working from within Pakistan has harmed him politically since there are quite a few militant islamic groups that have used this as an excuse to attack Musharef publically.

The war on terrorism so far has been extremely bad for both the US and the middle east and Asia.

Muslim oil?

I don't think so. Now if you said Venezuelan, American, Mexican, or North Sea oil, you'd be correct. There's also Nigerian oil, but that's a half Christian/half Muslim nation. Besides, Pakistan isn't a source of oil. And if you think Arab shieks are going to cut off the flow of money to save a bunch of non-Arabs, you've been reading the wrong chapters in Mein Kampf again. Muslims respond only to the use of force. The obliteration of Pakistan would send a message.

...even Musharaff doesn't know where all their nukes are. Field commanders have right to launch without order from Musharaff.

Where did you get this information? It's doubtful and certainly does not sound valid. That means any field commander could threaten Musharaff with a coup utilyzing nukes, an unlikely situation that the wilely General wouldn't allow.

I totally agree with you. The Indian military is by far superior to that of the Pakistanis, and the Indians also have the funds to ensure that there frontline units are some of the most advanced anywhere.

Actually i saw this article on India that illustrates the strengths of its military. For example they have a British Aircraft carrier, they have a very modern airforce with a mix of top-notch Russian jets (ala Su-33,which have modern combat suites) and they also sealed a deal to have some coated with RAM (radar absorbent materials for you newbies).

Also it should be noted that the Pakistani nukes can only reach about half of India, but the Indian arsenal can reach everypart of Pakistan. Also there are over 1 billion Indians, as opposed to 100million or so Pakistanis.

To make a long story short India would win in a conventional war, and would also win in a nuke-out. And although several Indian cities would be doing the 'green glow' for the next couple of millenia, there would be NO Pakistan to gloat over that.

So if Pakistan is wise it should just bow out since it really has no chance.

The irony is, we're restrainig India from going after the same Islamists and extremists that Pakistan is denying us from going after. Far from being useful, Pakistan is a hindrance, and is a haven for Al Qaida. India should be allowed to annihilate them.

True true. Pakistan is just a pretentious ally to the US, and probably harbors a lot of those al Queda kooks.

And come think of it, doesn't the Pakistani ISI help carry out terrorist attacks into India, meaning that a Pakistani govt agency is helping sponsor terrorism. How then can they be an ally if they are doing the thing they are supposed to be helping us stop?

Actually i consider Pakistan a bigger threat than al Queda! After all, what other Islamic nation with a huge base of religious zealots who view the US as the 'great Satan' has an arsenal of Nukes? None, only Pakistan.

And here we are pretending that they are an ally.

Even Pakistanis find that hilarious!

I seriously hope that the information you posted was not acquired from a US intelligence service!

Because if it was i am scared! Seriously though. How can they say the Privthi and Agni missiles are inferior? Or that they have not developed their strike capability.

Actually come think of it. When India was conducting its nuke tests in the late nineties, it managed to hide this from the CIA. The news of their first test (according to Time Magazine) was reported first on CNN several hours before the CIA got wond of this. (Several heads rolled in the 'firm' for that blunder).

What the Indians were doing is monitoring the US satellites as they flew overhead in space, and since they knew 3 used to fly by every so often they would prepare for the detonations, and once they got near they would 'cover' the sites to look like something benign. And thus when the test came the agency was busy watching re-runs of 007.

And as for the statement that the Indian airforce is a pushover! Huh! I just wrote a post about how Jane's Review rated the Indian airforce.

They have more planes, and they are newer and more advanced than those in Pakistani. The best thing Pakistan has is F-16s, which would be great were they not 'export' models that have been stripped of the more advanced tech. Kind of similar to those Mig-29s shot down over Iraq (good planes sold for export, thus stripped down to their basic configuration and thus not all that). However India has the latest Sukhoi fighters, and due to 'deals' with Russia they are still in possession of all their combat attributes (including Radar Absorbent Material coating in some). On top of the Sukhois India has upgraded French Mirages and even some Harriers for its aircraft carrier.

Pakistan is just simply outclassed in everyway.

And again i ponder, did an American Intelligence Agency come up with this info of India being outmatched by Pakistan? Because if they did then maybe the Indians are doing more weapons tests, and making the CIA satellites think they are engaging in Shrimp Farming and Lobster Trawling!!!!!!!!!????

Sorry to dissappoint you, but an Islamic "Republic" under attack by the "infidels" (I love using Iran's propagandistic terminology) would result in their involvement. Bangladesh would have to sit this one out, but Indonesia and Iran would do something, especially since they are out of range of India's missles. You have to be a student of this region to know that over the last 500 years, there has been a strong desire by the Islamic world to push the Hindu's into the sea. Luckily, Iran has to worry about our reaction for now, but the sad part is that China is our counterweight to any action in the region. This will get very dicey, especially if India invades and acquires a lot of territory in a short amount of time.

I wish it were that easy to do without oil. I remember a time and place when people knew how to live almost totally without oil. Unfortunately, we now live in a time when a great majority of the population would be totally helpless if the current economic structure collapsed. The Amish in Lancaster county might be in good shape but only until the starving hordes arrived in masse to steal their precious canned goods, horses, mules, cows, and other relics of the past which would suddenly become pearls without price. We have changed from a nation where the vast majority knew how to provide at least a subsistence level of food for themselves to a nation where many people actually have no idea how the food gets to the supermarket shelves.

(OBL has been dead since before 12/13/01.)

Hope you're right, but it does not change my post. Alive or dead, "OBL" is a useful short-hand way to refer to radical Islam.

Radical Islam, with or without OBL, wishes to unify all of Islam in "holy" war against people like me. They believe stirring up war in the Middle East and/or between India and Pakistan will do the trick.

It's absolutely necessary; we can't just sit around and wait to be hit again. This menace of radicalislamics has to be dealt with.
