My guess is Clinton may be a little less likely to use his political clout against Bush again.

Then you don't know Bill Clinton. Clinton has yet to meet the Republican that intimidates him. Certainly Bush does not, as Clinton is still walking around a free man.

I don't have an enormous problem with this move, but I do wish Bush would just ignore him. Bush could give Clinton a medal and it wouldn't stop him from criticizing Bush at his next $100,000 speech.

No he had another choice he could have prosecuted him for the crimes he comitted while he was in office

That would have been the right thing to do, but because of Bush's stupid "new tone" he has already given up that option.

I agree with you. East Timor--what a great junket!!

These people here need to lighten up. The last thing a mature adult needs to think about is getting even. Bush has much more important things to worry about.

Maybe it will, maybe it won't.

What it does prevent is any democrat or news agency allowing this tempest in a teacup to grow into a "public relations" nightmare for the Administration.

This is good. Now Bill can go back and thank all his Indonesian buds for all their help and especially the money.

Not to mention getting a 10% "finders fee" for any deals he can put together for Bubba-2/Prescott Bush while he's there.

Exactly. Clinton's friends were the oppressors in East Timor......do you think the East Timorese are ignorant of that fact???? What a brilliant move to send them their number one enemy!!!!

We would be spending the money to send someone.....that's just one of the things we do....not that I like it....but that's what we do - we send "officials" to events like this all around the world.

No, I do not want Bill Clinton representing me anywhere. He belongs in on trial, in jail, or worse for his crimes against this country.

And I don't like the fact that this gives him one iota of legitimacy.

But sending him to a place where Clinton acted on behalf of his Indonesian friends instead of on behalf of the people of East Timor - just to me seems quite, uh, fitting. Let's see if he gets the cheers of the wild mob there........as he usually did in all his staged photo ops for those eight long years of hell.

I think back to that picture of Clinton and the mobs in one of the AFrican country he visited. The look on Clinton's face was one of sheer panic and fear. Perhaps he will meet something similar in East Timor.

Why is everyone so mad about this? If it is true, I see it as a kick in the crotch to ol' Billy. Nothing more.

This may sound like looking at the glass being half-full but look at it this way ... if Bill Clinton readily accepts this assignment, it means he has committed himself to accepting these assignments whenever they come up ...

This is where it gets interesting ... East Timor is off our list of problems ... and there are always plenty of places of little interest where Bush can send X42. Now we all know there is no-one better at bringing out the 'Rat base than Clinton.

We're going to have mid-term elections soon. It'll soon be heavy campaign season ... what if Bush suddenly finds something for Clinton to do at that time?

I dunno about you, but I'd rather have Bill Clinton talking to a bunch of nobodies in East Timor--all of whom hate his guts--than talking to an ever-fawning press here in the USA.

The political effect of this will be to elevate Bubba-1. One more reason for the press to fawn over him,and one more "reason" for the Dims to later claim Bubba-2 NEEDED the help of Bubba-1 because he is incompetent when it comes to foreign affairs.

As usual, the only real winner here is Bubba-1. Unless he uses his time there to work oil deals and other contracts for the Bush family, that is. He surely has the contacts, and this is about the only way he can visit with his old pals, who fled the USA to keep from facing criminal charges or being forced to testify.

It's done all the time, though

I believe Reagan use to ignore Carter in these situations. And if it is done all the time, what better way to put B.C. in his place by never letting go on these type junkets. The press will just fawn over him. B.C. is also going around making policy statements about the M.E. By giving him this assignment Bush is just helping B.C. out.

When Bill is out of the country he can't do any damage to the Bush administration.

You mean other than being a impeached president who is serving as the official representative of the United States?

This is a brilliant move for a number of reasons.

Yeah, seems like everything Bubba-2 does is a "brilliant move",right? I'll even bet this is one more example of "Bush's secret plan to make the Dims look bad".

Do you have that picture of Clinton with the look of panic on his face when he was mobbed in that AFrican country?

I don't get this one at all either. Clinton should in no way, no shape or form, be given any credibility from the Bush administration. Clinton should be ignored, period. I don't care if it's timbuktu, he shouldn't be given any role with even a hint of official capacity. W's off his rocker on this one.

"...their guy has FINALLY gotten an official something official to do."

Exactly.
clinton gets to stay in the picture instead of fading away like the bad odor he is.
ANY "official" job keeps him in the game, which is all he needs for the moment.
clinton now has relevance. We will now be seeing more of him as the years go by.
#@!*!%$!

This is absolutely disgusting. Bush should be prosecuting him not sending him on a mission. He is going to lose the base that elected him.

Too late.

Think how easy it would be to "lose" Bubba in East Timor..... : )

Nice try at minimizing this, but it won't be easy at all. He will be surrounded by dozens of Secret Service agents, and hundreds of journalists with cameras and microphones.

We were already seeing more of him. Remember??? Talkshow host? Clinton cannot stand to be out of the public eye and he has many friends in the media/entertainment world. I can guarantee that he will be seeking more and more exposure - (good term for him) - no matter what President Bush does or does not do. At the very least, imagine the fun of sending Clinton and pals to this part of the world....INSTEAD of getting him involved in the Middle East, or N. Korea, or anywhere else.

Had the President sent Clinton THERE I would join all who are upset at this.
