Kinda like trying to car-jack an off-duty Navy Seal... Some people (Darwin candidates) have all the luck.

Those on deck said it appeared the men on the small boats tried to surrender, but the Diehl's gunner kept firing as the ship moved ahead.Smart move.

No mention of damage by our gunner. If he missed with a .50 cal., he should be charged with a crime.

I heard about something this last night on the Batchelor & Alexander Show. I was half asleep but the guest(?) they had on said it was 'a small incedent with an American warship and some Iranian boats'. He said he didn't have much info yet.

local pirates who may not have realized the ship they were trying to board was a U.S. Navy vessel. D'oh!

......and, being as that they're on the road, the
pirates will be hard pressed to offer a plausible alibi.

USNS WALTER S. DIEHL (T-AO 193)
Kaiser class Oiler
A U.S. Navy oiler ship was forced to fire its guns against a half dozen small power boats that approached it as the ship passed through the Straits of Hormuz on April 23 in the Persian Gulf near Iran.

Piracy was the lifeblood of Islamics in the Mediterranean for many centuries. And don't forget Tripoli...

if we were smart, we could rid the high-seas of these pirates by adopting the strategy of the German raider ships of WWII. The Navy could take some of those liberty trannsport ships out of mothballs, disguise them to look like tramp steamers, arm them to the teeth and load-em up with marines and sail around the south seas, Caribean and other danger spots. When terrorists and pirate go after them they get the suprise of their lives - like a twenty-one thousand round salute from a gatling gun hidden in a fake connex container!

I say "Pirates" supposing this was a civilian ship is BS!
These were Terrorists.
"Pirates" could've watched from a good distance through a pair of cheap binos and seen that it had US Navy markings on it.
There is only one reason to try to get close to it....KABOOM.

This reminds me of a move with Michael Cain. Can anyone help me with the name?

The ship was defended using a 50-caliber machine gun. The obvious implication is that other ships could be defended using a 50-caliber machine gun.
However, our friendly neighborhood fedgov prohibits US civilian ships from mounting 50-caliber machine guns.
My point? (As if it wasn't already obvious) ... the fedgov is assisting piracy and terrorism by preventing civilians from arming themselves.
