Saudis Crack Down on Women's Clothes
(AP) ^

MANAMA, Bahrain --

The Saudi government is cracking down on factories producing versions of women's cloaks that violate religious rules, a government-controlled newspaper said Thursday.

The report did not say what versions were being targeted of the black, head-to-toe garments Saudi women are required to wear, but some women in the conservative kingdom have been wearing cloaks with glittering red, blue or silver sequins on the cuffs or a jeans pocket sewn on the back.

Cloaks found to be in violation of the rules "will be confiscated and destroyed, while punitive measures will be taken against their owners," the English-language Arab News newspaper quoted Abdul Ali bin Ibrahim Abdul Aali, in charge of combatting trade fraud in the conservative Gulf kingdom, as saying.

Aali said that the ministry is working with the Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice to enforce the crackdown on factories producing the "non-regulation" garments, which are becoming increasingly popular in large Saudi cities, the newspaper reported.

It was not clear when the crackdown began. Ministry officials could not be reached for comment.

Aali said a Saudi religious ruling requires a "decent woman's" cloak to be thick and non-revealing, not body hugging, and devoid of decorations or markings that would attract public attention, the newspaper said.

"Not so: many of them are strikingly beautiful. "

Are you sure? How can you tell? The few I have seen have been hit hard with an ugly stick. But then I haven't seen too many, they are always veiled or whatever.

For all their faults, the middle east has some beautiful women. See Post #7 here for an example.

I was told that the reason a woman is supposed to be covered in Islam, is that she is supposed to be invisible to all men but her husband. I guess you can't lust after what you can't see.

That is a very interesting contrast you pointed out.  In other words, the Saudis force virtue, as they define it, upon their women, while the Israeli government offers [what many of us consider to be] vice to their women, giving them a choice in the matter.  It is difficult to look upon Saudi women and know which ones, then, are modest and submissive by sincere choice and which do it out of fear of punishment (and therefore are in their hearts quite hypocritical).  It is also true that the Saudi men are coerced in other ways to appear religious, although they do have much more freedom than the women.  The Muslim religiosity & all its various decrees and interpretations forced down the throats of the people of certain nations is the true weakness of Islam.

Nahhh... they are ugly, and VERY FAT. Obese, burgeoning Manechuas. The good looking ones get the hell outta there before they are raped by a brother, cousin or uncle, and then stoned for committing adultery.

They cannot enjoy sex, because of their mandatory "clitorectomies" so they just eat... and eat and eat. It would be interesting to get a REAL statistical study on the rate of female suicides, murders and "accidental" immolations these ladies face.

They are NOT allowed to take any pride in their God given beauty... as this is considered adultery, and sexually immoral behavior.

I guess I would eat my self to death too.

As a result of their cultural insanity regarding women in general, the women end up looking ike pigs, even moreso with their body tents on.

Ugly men, ugly women, ugly people... all of them... with VERY FEW EXCEPTIONS... Islam has made them so.

***Fashion Police?***

They will arrest Hillary and Chelsea. On second thought, it could be that veils might be a good idea for some families here in the U.S.

I was thinking of the more succinct description: "...a hive of scum and villainy". Sounds EXACTLY like the Clinton White House.

Not so: many of them are strikingly beautiful.

And many of them are strikingly UGLY. Because of the coverings, they have not been selecting for good looks since the time of the Prophet...

Apparently this practice of covering women started with Mohammed, whose wives were hit on by other men.

You have it backward. It was the Profit who liked to hit on other men's wives. What he'd do was kill the husband, then add the widow to his harem. Apparently the coverup started when he got the hots for his daughter-in-law.
