RON PAUL VOTES TO UPHOLD WELFARE REFORM AND RESTRICT FOOD STAMPS FOR IMMIGRANTS

Congressman Ron Paul yesterday voted to uphold welfare reform laws that revoked the eligibility of most legal immigrants to receive food stamps. Paul joined more than 170 of his House colleagues in opposing legislation that would loosen eligibility requirements and force American taxpayers to fund food stamp programs for recent immigrants.

"The welfare state, not immigration per se, is the real culprit behind many of the social ills attributed to immigration," Paul stated. "America should welcome immigrants from around the world who want to come to this country, work hard, and create a better life for themselves. The hardworking immigrants who built this nation before any welfare system existed truly exemplified American ideals. Our current welfare state, however, distorts incentives by enabling recent immigrants to obtain taxpayer-funded benefits like food stamps. This system often attracts the wrong kind of immigrants and causes understandable resentment among taxpayers."

"Only by ending welfare can we insure that immigrants come to America for the right reasons," Paul concluded. "New immigrants should seek freedom and opportunity, not government handouts. Sensible immigration policies start with sensible welfare reform policies."

If only 170 others voted against this that means it passed, correct?

RIGHT ON THE MONEY! THE CITIZENS OF MEXICO ARE LAUGHING UP THEIR SLEEVES AT THE STUPID AMERICANS. WHAT OTHER COUNTRY WOULD ALLOW YOU TO ROAM AROUND FREELY AND HAVE YOUR WELFARE AND FOOD STAMPS SENT TO A POST OFFICE BOX SOMEWHERE. IT IS HARD TO TRACK THESE PEOPLE DOWN WHEN NEEDED BECAUSE HALF THE TIME THEY ARE DOWN IN MEXICO BUILDING THEIR NEW HOME.

Ron Paul is right, the policy attracts the wrong kind of people and breeds resentment among the tax paying population. End the welfare entitlement for immigrants.

Interesting comments here by the most conservative member of the House of Reps, Rep. Ron Paul. While Paul supports open-borders immigration (gag), he supports dismantling the free welfare, educational, and medical government benefits and reversing the offer of free citizenship for babies born to illegals in the US which lure millions to break US law and enter this country by the millions. I wholeheartedly agree with his comments about these social-welfare state trappings attracting "the wrong kind of immigrants". If we could pass laws which take away the incentives for illegals to break the law, we would have to spend a lot less time and money enforcing the law against illegal immigrant law breakers and their law-breaking employers. Shame on Bush and Hastert for sponsoring one of the GOP Congress's most enduring accomplishments--passing a common-sense welfare reform over the opposition of a President opposed to welfare reform for some of the very same reasons as Bush and Hastert! Surprise, surprise!

While Paul supports open-borders immigration

I can't find that tidbit in the article. Are you sure Paul supports Open-borders immigration? Not just says we should welcome immigrants, but have open borders?

"And the illegal aliens?"

A provision about illegal aliens must not have been in the bill.

Most conservative?? What? Paul only gets a 76% from the ACU. I've heard Congressmen labeled Rinos by some FReepers for a voting record higher than that.

Remember, Ron is a past LP candidate for president. He would support open borders (I believe) in the context of complete elimination of the welfare state and complete elimination of any laws restricting freedom of association and commerce.

Without those caveats he'd say open borders was lunacy, as would any intelligent libertarian.

Paul's statement above are a ringing endorsement of Bush's idiotic "open-borders" policy. Obviously, Paul does not support a "no borders" policy that Bush and Fox are flirting with and I think you are getting that confused with our current "open borders" policy. Fortunately, Paul clarifies his support of open borders with drastically cutting the welfare-state pro-immigration incentives which induce illegal immigrants from Mexico to come to America.

The problem is that it is an assumption. I am aware of Paul's past associations, they do not mean that he holds to all parts of the LP platform. It was the precise reason I was asking the question because I wanted to find out if anyone could provide evidence/facts about his stance, not assumptions.

Apparently, you are still using badly discredited ACU figures to determine how conservative a member of Congress is. The ACU is totally discredited because it uses party loyalty not conservativeness as the qualifier for a positive "conservative" ranking. (They actually had mushy moderate Bob Dole at 100% conservative for a while) Accordingly, the ACU conservative rating only measures party loyalty not conservativeness. Thus, using your figures Rep. Ron Paul supports the Republican House leadership 76% of the time. The other 24% of the time when the GOP House leadership is supporting stuff like amnesty for aliens, the Ted Kennedy education bill, the Clinton "balanced" budget, etc, Paul wisely chooses to vote for conservative principle instead of party. The best measure of conservativism for our Congressman I have yet found is published by the New American magazine's Conservative Index. It used to be on the Internet, but no longer is. You now have to subscribe to get it. At $39 a year it is well worth the price for the best conservative magazine in America. Check out www.thenewamerican.com for more info.

I am unconfused. The statement was made that Paul supports "open borders". Which means that people can come and go unfettered with no immigration laws. I do not believe that is Paul's position.

It's good to see corporations like Amoco help our Indian immigrants with jobs in their stores. I'm sure they probably get the usual 5 year "no tax" break, that other immigrants have gotten.

That will help them stay off the welfare roles.

Damn, a 5 year "no tax" break would help me a hell of a lot too.

Oh that's right, some of us have to pay taxes so that others won't have to work and politicians can continue to get their above "cost of living" pay increases while we continue to lose ground.

Oh well, I guess as long as I can still call myself "American" it's worth it, right?

BIG BUMP for Ron Paul.

Go Man Go
