Anchors Aweigh

I am the American Sailor

Hear my voice, America! Though I speak through the mist of 200 years, my shout for freedom will echo through liberty's halls for many centuries to come. Hear me speak, for my words are of truth and justice, and the rights of man. For those ideals I have spilled my blood upon the world's troubled waters. Listen well, for my time is eternal - yours is but a moment.

I am the spirit of heroes past and future. I am the American Sailor. I was born upon the icy shores at Plymouth, rocked upon the waves of the Atlantic, and nursed in the wilderness of Virginia. I cut my teeth on New England codfish, and I was clothed in southern cotton. I built muscle at the halyards of New Bedford whalers, and I gained my sea legs high atop mizzen of Yankee clipper ships.

Yes, I am the American Sailor, one of the greatest seamen the world has ever known. The sea is my home and my words are tempered by the sound of paddle wheels on the Mississippi and the song of whales off Greenland's barren shore. My eyes have grown dim from the glare of sunshine on blue water, and my heart is full of star-strewn nights under the Southern Cross.

My hands are raw from winter storms while sailing down round the Horn, and they are blistered from the heat of cannon broadside while defending our nation. I am the American Sailor, and I have seen the sunset of a thousand distant, lonely lands. I am the American Sailor. It was I who stood tall beside John Paul Jones as he shouted, "I have not yet begun to fight!" I fought upon the Lake Erie with Perry, and I rode with Stephen Decatur into Tripoli harbor to burn Philadelphia.

I met Guerriere aboard Constitution, and I was lashed to the mast with Admiral Farragut at Mobile Bay. I have heard the clang of Confederate shot against the sides of Monitor. I have suffered the cold with Peary at the North Pole, and I responded when Dewey said, "You may fire when ready Gridley," at Manila Bay. It was I who transported supplies through submarine infested waters when our soldier's were called "over there." I was there as Admiral Byrd crossed the South Pole. It was I who went down with the Arizona at Pearl Harbor, who supported our troops at Inchon, and patrolled dark deadly waters of the Mekong Delta.

I am the American Sailor and I wear many faces. I am a pilot soaring across God's blue canopy and I am a Seabee atop a dusty bulldozer in the South Pacific. I am a corpsman nursing the wounded in the jungle, and I am a torpedoman in the Nautilus deep beneath the North Pole. I am hard and I am strong.

But it was my eyes that filled with tears when my brother went down with the Thresher, and it was my heart that rejoiced when Commander Shepherd rocketed into orbit above the earth. It was I who languished in a Viet Cong prison camp, and it was I who walked upon the moon. It was I who saved the Stark and the Samuel B. Roberts in the mine infested waters of the Persian Gulf. It was I who pulled my brothers from the smoke filled compartments of the Bonefish and wept when my shipmates died on the Iowa and White Plains. When called again, I was there, on the tip of the spear for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

I am the American Sailor. I am woman, I am man, I am white and black, yellow, red and brown. I am Jew, Muslim, Christian and Buddhist. I am Irish, Filipino, African, French, Chinese, and Indian. And my standard is the outstretched hand of Liberty. Today, I serve around the world, on land, in air, on and under the sea. I serve proudly, at peace once again, but with the fervent prayer that I need not be called again.

Tell your children of me. Tell them of my sacrifice, and how my spirit soars above their country. I have spread the mantle of my nation over the ocean and I will guard her forever. I am her heritage and yours.

I AM THE AMERICAN SAILOR

The United States has ships and submarines deployed AT ALL TIMES! No matter what time of year, their are families all over the US that are missing their fathers and mothers due to deployment.

The Night Before...

''Twas the night before deployment and all through our home there was movement and >br>chatter through each room I did roam.

The seabags were packed, stacked near the doorway with care. Because 2400 end of
liberty, soon would be here.

Little Jimmy was up, he would not go to bed. In a diaper, my black shoes, my cap pulled over
his head, He tromped through the house and he smiled with glee, When I said, "Yep,
you're a sailor, a sailor like me".

I'll be gone at least six months, six months or more, by then he'll have another height
"notch" mark on the door.

Then there's Tommy asleep, you know he's turned ten, he said he wished I didn't have to
leave him again. This morning I chuckled when I pulled him out of the rack, he said heh'd been dreaming of a Big Mac Attack!

I made sure I got to his soccer game yesterday, for you see, the rest of the season
I'll be away.

There's my wife, this last week she's started to cry and pine, its not easy to leave her and
the children behind.

There's Linda who is seventeen, her prom's drawing near, My princess in formal, wish I
could be here. Her boyfriend will arive in his formal coat tail, time goes so fast, will she
soon wear a white veil?

Linda's friend was just over and I heard her say, "how can you stand it when
your father's away?"

"Its hard I miss him, whenever he's gone, but to beg him to stay would be terribly wrong,
Its his job, its his duty, his career don't you see, its for country, our family and you, he
keeps us all free. And you've heard of terrorists who al lthink they're right, to threaten and scare people and shoot many on sight. There's not many jobs as important you hear, the
Navy's our life, a family career."

And I heard my children yell as we pulled out from the pier,
"We'll miss you, we love ya, Daddy, we'll wait for you here!"

I am reposting this since it is Navy Day in the USO Canteen.

You may recall a few days ago Snow Bunny posted
some e-mails from military who have been to the USO Canteen.

Members of the USS DECATUR DDG 73 come here often to lurk.
In fact they "know" many of us in here.
So I thought it would be nice to "dock" their ship in the USO Canteen today.
There is a lot of info about the crew, the ship and pics on their site.
Just Click on any Pic to visit their site.

THE OLD MAN AND THE SAILOR
by Robert L. Harrison .
July 22, 1997 . Greenfield, Indiana

He was old and worn and a bit forlorn as he ambled through the park,
He spoke to me and I could see that his eyes had lost their spark.
His gait was slow and his voice was low as he asked to sit with me,
And I answered him with a friendly grin, The sittin’ here is free.

He gave a smile and we talked a while and his voice was rather weak,
But his mind was strong and it wasn't long til he began to speak
Of yesteryears and I saw the tears as the mem’ries flooded through
For he spoke of times and other climes as old men often do.

He smiled at me and I could see as he glanced at my Navy blues
That he’d earned his keep on the briny deep and paid his share of dues.
I asked if he would share with me some mem'ries from his career,
He said he might if the price was right, and the price was a can of beer!

I’ve shipped on subs and oily tubs, on battleships and cruisers,
Ten thousand mates and I can state not one of them was losers.
LST’s on foreign seas, from Tarawa to Leyte,
You name it, lad, I’ve been there, from Alaska down to Haiti.

Liberty ships of paper clips, balsa wood and glue,
I saw one break apart one time and lose her gallant crew.
Marine Corps I took ashore on Tarawa and Truk.
Oh what the Hell, for quite a spell, I've had my share of luck.

One thing more, he said, before I move along,
There ain't no air that’s quite as fair as the pipe of the boatswain’s song.
And the place to be is on the sea riding a fair sea swell,
With mates like you in Navy blue who’ll follow you straight through Hell.

So here’s to you and your Navy crew who take our ships to sea,
You’ve fought and died and never cried throughout our history.
You’re heroes all and ten feet tall and your spirits never lag,
You’re the nation’s best and you never rest in defense of our country’s flag!

He rose to leave and I believe that he seemed to move much faster,
His eyes agleam like a laser beam and his skin was alabaster,
He glowed at first then soon dispersed in a cloud of misty cotton,
A dream at most, perhaps a ghost, but not to be forgotten.
