Dear Mr. President:
We write out of deep concern over your response to the recent events in the Middle East. While we appreciate the importance of sending Secretary of State Colin Powell to the region, we are troubled by certain developments that have occurred during his trip. By urging the resumption of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA), before the PA officially abandons their policy of suicide homicides against civilian populations, you have dramatically changed your steadfast policy towards not meeting with Chairman Arafat until he commits to a cease?fire.
As long as Arafat continues to support and fund terrorists, it is difficult to conceive that any progress can be made from meeting with him. Most worrisome, a meeting between Secretary Powell and Chairman Arafat in light of today's attack in Jerusalem validates the contention that Arafat is gaining ground through his strategy of terror.
If Secretary Powell meets with Chairman Arafat, we hope that the Secretary will make it clear that this is his final opportunity. In the past, Mr. Arafat has proven himself to be unreliable in following up with commitments to peace. Consequently, we believe that Secretary Powell should demand that Mr. Arafat act to eradicate the terrorist networks operating under his authority. Secretary Powell should make clear that if he does not comply, the United States will sever all ties with him.
Finally, we are dismayed by the pressure on Israel to withdraw from Palestinian towns before the Israeli military has had a chance to complete its operations. As the United States knows from its experience in Afghanistan, an operation of this kind takes time. If Israel is not allowed to complete its campaign, more Israeli lives will be vulnerable to future rounds of suicide bombings. If there is to be peace, Israel needs to isolate those elements of the Palestinian Authority that threaten its existence.
Thank you for your attention to our concerns. We look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Charles E. Schumer
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Susan Collins
Gordon Smith
Jon Corzine
Perhaps I'm being idealistic, but it would sure be nice if our elected officials could make decisions based on what's best for America, rather than dictate policy by setting "traps" for someone to fall into.
Second, this was win-win for her. She got to see Arafat gain credibility, and she got to see George W. Bush lose support from even his biggest fans (myself included.)
And she didn't write the thing -- she just came along for the ride. It says nothing about what she believes.
That must be it, that is the only way I could possibly be in agreement with something that thing says.
My opinion is Bush should of given the go ahead to punch Arafats ticket but I don't care what Schumer, the Clinton bitch or rino's who stood by and watched terrorists kill Americans for a decade have to say. Not one damn bit.
And if Bush takes out Hussein like I think he is going to, his position here is well justified. Americas threat is from Iraq, not Palestinians.
Bush should do whats best for America and Sharon should do whats best for Israel and hypocrites should suffer from genital psoraisis.
(BTW, I have never seen a thread fill up with comments so fast!!!)
This letter is direct off Senator Clinton's web site at www.clinton.senate.gov ... it's a hard site to take, because all Hillary does is gloat over all her "accomplishments" in office...
In a nutshell.
They have an issue 'cornered' for themselves and they are letting GW know it.
The could give a 'rat's behind' whether Colin Power went or did not go. No doubt had a letter planned for either strategy.
There taking the 'high' road on this; is a joke. . .they never leave their low-lying trails.
They are searching for an 'issue' on which to attack; and preparing their paper trail as well.
On Friday, Michael Savage on his show the Savage Nation, addressed the "ten people in Washington" who were among his many millions of listeners...
Savage called upon the TEN, whether they were in POWER, or the office-help for someone in power, to realize that if they had a raw-ambitious desire, not one motivated to help this nation or for Israel...all they had to do was come out in SUPPORT of Israel, and against Arafat...
And THEN, this ONE could and WOULD BE the ***NEXT*** President of the United States!
Savage was probably addressing his comments to the Conservatives...but a Democrat was listening.
No, I think that's 'Ol Crusty - (Hildebeast's infamous slimming black pantsuit!)
