PROBLEMS WITH MICROSOFT XP?
April 12, 2002 | EggsAckley

Posted on 04/12/2002 12:06:58 PM PDT by EggsAckley

We have a Hewlett-Packard, purchased in Oct.01, with the new XP system. We have had continuous trouble with it, and have even sent it back to the factory, where they replaced the hard drive. The system has a tendency to just shut down in the middle of working. Also, Microsoft neglected to make the system compatible with HP's 3-way printer (even though the computer is also HP.) There are other problems concerning word processing, as well.

We are at a point where work that needs to be done, cannot be done on the HP, and must be taken to KINKO'S.
This is WRONG! We get nothing but run-around from both HP AND Microsoft (surprise surprise.)

XP is the best OS I've ever had and when it has crashed, it's been my own fault, usually because of driver mess-ups.

No, it's not your fault it crashed. A stable operating system wouldn't crash no matter what you threw at it. XP has crashed 3 times in one day on my system. XP still has many bugs in it.

What is the best PC on the market?

If you can, home build one. Otherwise, I'd go with a Dell first, Gateway second. Just MHO..

Place your XP CD in the PC, and when it autostarts, select the item for checking on compatibility.

The XP CD is the bootable disk. As was pointed out, just temporarily alter the BIOS boot drive-seek order.

My first computer was a E Machine, I had to return it to the store after about 2 weeks. My next one was a Compaq Presario and I just got a Dell a few days with Windows XP. I love it

We just bought about 100 dell laptops, and i don't think ive used a slower pc of any type than these new Inspiron's.

I can't speak for any other dell eqpt, but these laptops should be recalled and new, faster models sent back to the customer. Boy, we made a huge mistake.

"I tried enabling the TCP/IP for Microsoft Windows clients and servers, and was not able to see my Windows 2000 systems. When I disabled NetBEUI in Windows 2000, I was no longer able to see any other computers on my network. As usual Microsoft left out documentation for how to switch a network from NetBEUI to TCP/IP."

Are you running a domain or a workgroup? Workgroups require the same workgroup comm. protocol since they don't use tcp/ip for internetworking.

Get an Apple, and you won't have these problems.

WOW... It took 45 posts before a Mac fan entered the thread. What's wrong? :-P

I have had XP since the day it was released and have had no problems. In addition, I opted to buy a LEXMARK Z53 over the comparable HP printer and have no regrets at all. The Z53 is a great little printer.

I believe that WinXP has retired support for NetBUI.

Thanks. Am still wary of Norton. It's Clean Sweep did me in several OS's ago.

I love Norton Utilites and Clean sweep for several years.I had Norton System 2001 on my last computer and will get 2002 next mont. I never had any problem with clean sweep. I use it to clean out my cache

THANKS, MAYBE THINGS ARE BETTER NOW.

I had it clean things out 4-5 years ago. . . and it deleted a number of DLLS that other programs still needed. I was very upset. Cost me a lot of time.

Some of these disk cleaning utilities are pretty lame. I forget which one now, but years ago one disk cleaning utility I had wasted money on tagged its own DLL files as useless and ready for deletion!

I am using a workgroup. I tried enabling TCP/IP and disabling NetBEUI in all the computers in the workgroup, but they refused to talk to each other.
