"I tried enabling the TCP/IP for Microsoft Windows clients and servers, and was not able to see my Windows 2000 systems. When I disabled NetBEUI in Windows 2000, I was no longer able to see any other computers on my network. As usual Microsoft left out documentation for how to switch a network from NetBEUI to TCP/IP."

Are you running a domain or a workgroup? Workgroups require the same workgroup comm. protocol since they don't use tcp/ip for internetworking.

I am using a workgroup. I tried enabling TCP/IP and disabling NetBEUI in all the computers in the workgroup, but they refused to talk to each other.
