The uniformed officer responding from the 911 call was there when he returned from driving around the block, and did a walk through with them, and then kept the family outside until investigators arrived, who were then in control of the premises till 10 p.m. or so. And they spent the night at the neighbors, because of the mess left by evidence technicians.

The vacuum thing is a red herring tossed out by Feldman.

Investigators took two vacuum bags, one from the trash, one from the machine itself. Brenda testified she vacummed the downstairs (sometime before Danielle was missing), changed the bag and took the machine upstairs because she intended to use it upstairs that wknd. Events intervened.

The investigators also took the entire steam machine into evidence. If they had found evidence of blood in either, they would have been on those parents like flies on cowpats.

Of course, we can still question whether or not Damon's account of the evening is accurate. Certainly he did his share of waffling and story changing over time, and for that matter, even on the stand.

Question away, but the police also questioned the brothers, about the evening, so they have more than Damon's version of the evening.

They did investigate the parents, their home and their friends. That it was done in record time seems strange to some, but to others it is a testimony to how seriously SDPD took the case and the amount of manpower and resources they devoted to it.

Indeed, why were the parents cleared in 13 hours? Even after the police KNEW they lied to them the first few times they were questioned, they were still cleared.

My personal opinion is that the Van Dams had a business relationship or deal of some kind with Westerfield, at least for the night in question, some kind of arrangement existed...

They are trying to minimize the extent to which they knew him...

I believe the same. As spectre put it, "why lie?" Why is knowing him a crime? Why would dancing with him be so awful? It means nothing. As a matter of fact, they could even say he befriended them to get to their daughter, all the while acting like a nice, kind neighbor. That would certainly make them seem more victimized, and him more like a predator. Instead, they pretend to hardly know him, and they even change their stories about knowing him. I think they know him well (my observation comes from the changing of their stories concerning him, and GUT feeling). We do not know what DW has told his attorneys, and what his attorneys may bring up. Is DW the patsy for something that was very ugly?
