Two Senate candidates walk out of GOP dinner
March 26, 2002 1:16 am
CONCORD, N.C. -- Two Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate walked out of a GOP dinner after a party official refused their request to speak.
Elizabeth Dole was the keynote speaker at the Cabarrus County Republican Party's annual Reagan Day dinner on Monday. Other GOP candidates were invited to attend but not speak.
One of the candidates, Ada Fisher, posted herself outside the club with a sign protesting the denial of what she called her "free speech."
When Dole arrived, Fisher complained about the perceived slight.
"I'm delighted to have you come in and speak," Dole told her. "Why don't you go tell them that it's fine with me."
Dole made similar comments to rival Jim Snyder of Lexington.
Last week Cabarrus GOP Chairman David Black said Dole campaign officials had said they prefer other candidates vying for retiring Sen. Jesse Helm's seat not speak at Monday's dinner, which served as a party fund-raiser.
Though Snyder left, Fisher went into the dinner and took a seat at a table with fellow Senate candidate Douglas Sellers of Rowan County. During the introductions, Fisher blurted out: "Do we get our chance to speak that Mrs. Dole said we could have?"
"Mrs. Fisher I'm sorry," Black replied. "But we're running about 45 minutes late tonight."
Fisher and Sellers stood up. Turning to leave, Sellers announced, "I'm not afraid to look at any of you. Please don't be afraid to look at any of us."
Fisher, Snyder and other GOP candidates have complained about what they see as the preferential treatment party officials accord Dole. Critics complain that Dole is getting unusual help from party officials -- including President Bush, who has plugged her on three trips to North Carolina since January.
As she left the Speedway Club, Fisher was still angry.
"I can beat anybody in a fair race," she said. "But when you tie me down and stuff my mouth so I can't talk, it's a little difficult."

Dang, I missed that. Please add that to my reply to Fred Mertz.

If this doesn't work, and admittedly it may not, then it is time for secession. Secession may ultimately prove to be the best option anyway. TERM LIMITS of members of Congress and the federaly judiciary is the only hope of restoring Constitutional integrity to our country, and frankly I don't see it happening over the self-interest of the current powers to be. The only other option is a Constitutional Convention. And perhaps this is worthy of consideration before secession.
Anyway you look at the political options and future of the United States, it is not a pretty picture. The unfunded liabilities of Social Security and Medicare cannot be funded and paid for. The political clout to fix them is expiring at the rate of ten per cent per year. The clock will run out in 2012. There will be no presidential election in 2016 if we don't solve this financial problem before it becomes a crises in 2012. Basically it will have to be solved on Bush's or if he is a one term president, his successor's watch. Without a major shift to the right in Congress, this is not going to happen. For the near term, there is no clear cut leadership or movement that could in effect reduplicated the 1994 Congressional elections. The strategy that I have outlined above can demonstrate to the country and its political leaders the realities of our times. Failing such a dramatic demonstration, I would not expect the changes that must be made to have the political capital or momentum needed to come about. The sand in the hour glass of the United States is running out. We can turn the country around or watch it disintegrate. There really aren't many options. Continuing on the same course is financial ruin and disintegration under chaotic and hysterical conditions. There are only two ways for organized turn around. Scare the Republicans by turning the House and Senate over to Democrats through conservatives voting for conservative third parties or if not available any other conservative candidate, hopefully awakening the Republican Pary to what it has to do if it is to remain a politically viable party. Failing this, a Constitutional Convention would have a chance. But in the final analysis, I think that secession of a single state will result in a stampede of secessions. From this, we should see a group of regional republics competeing with one another for citizens interested in freedom and free enterprise. The socialistic centers will learn a sharp quick lesson in politics and economics. Most of us haven't realized that the United States where we thought we lived and wanted to live again disappeared at least thirty years ago. There may not be any possibility of recapturing it again. And the need may have ended when the Soviet Union collapsed.
Right. Like how we got Dubya to live up to his word and veto Campaign Finance Reform, the Kennedy Education bill, tighten Immigration controls, and how we will get him to veto the 1994 assault weapon ban when it is back up for confirmation.
Like that. That sort of 'holding his feet to the fire'.
EXACTLY!!!!! Now you got it!
(don't forget, it's all part of a master plan to beat the Dems ;-)
Probably both. Think Bloodgate.
"The Whole Key to effecting Change in D.C. is to get Repubs elected. When WE TALK, THEY Listen! That's the way it is. That and Name Recognition. That's the way it is. Yeah, get more Repubs in, with name recognition, hold their tootsies to the fire, talk to them, and DON'T criticize them! We're at WAR!
O.K., I've gotta go throw up my breakfast, but I hope you've got The Big Picture now."
I think Fred got it. But there are some reading here that haven't. So I Bolded it this time. ;-)
Probably both. Think Bloodgate."
'Zactly!
...next month, who knows? I don't trust anyone who waffles on such important issues.
You can count on her to flip again as soon as the next fickle swing of public opinion indicates perceived gun-grabbing sentiments are on the rise.
OK..Lets assume Bush and Dole are not "socialist". That seems a fair premise. There are two other categories often subscribed to republicans. Moderates and rightwingers, which of those two would you place Bush and Dole?
You have to keep in mind now the democrats have only democrats.
Yeah, who was that jerk who said, "Give me liberty, or give me death!", when we were trying to seceede from King George? What a moron he was. Probably just another misguided Freeper.
(psst. that was my point.)
How come when these sorta ideas are brought up they are bashed? Is it because we dont want to change and better our lives? How did you feel in 1999 Nov-Dec? Would you have went to Fl and made your voice heard?
Remember in Nov-Dec 1999 Bush said something like at least we did not have tanks down thier? Could I dare say this have become a dictaorship? With votes bought by the controlling parties? I wish I had answers but who does?
