The Maine Senate, ratifying a shift in the chamber's partisan balance of power, voted 18-16 Friday to permanently seat Democrat Michael Brennan of Portland after a review panel concluded he won a five-way District 27 special election by 10 votes.
The Senate vote pitted Democrats against Republicans, with independent Jill Goldthwait of Bar Harbor avoiding a potential deadlock by siding with the Democrats to seat Brennan. Brennan, whose district includes Falmouth, Long Island and part of Portland, did not vote.
Republicans had maintained that some absentee ballots that arrived after the special election polls closed on March 5 should have been and still should be counted. Democrats said that would violate state law and go against standard practice.
Brennan's permanent seating affirms the Democratic acquisition of a Senate majority.
Prior to the death in January of Republican Joel Abromson, the chamber had been split between the two parties 17-17, with Goldthwait serving as the lone independent.
WHat was a 17-17-1 balance in the Maine Senate now is 18-16-1 for the Rats, who now control both the House and Senate, and have a decent shot of the governorship this year.
This whole story parallel's the Florida fiasco where Al Gore tried to throw out military ballots. There also has been no outcry to count every vote, or voter disenfranchisement.

When did the Post Office deliver the ballots?
What reason did they give for such a late delivery?
.
But the will of the people has been thwarted! Those people have been disenfranchised! Count every vote! We just want a full, fair, and accurate counting of all the --- Oh, that would favor the wrong side. Never mind.
Makes me think these Maine Democrats are taking advantage of the war to pursue private agendas.
It's overdue time to round'em up and ship'em out!
If you thought phoney Independent King was bad just wait until Baldy gets through with us.
Check out The ACU ratings for our Maine delegation.
Our two reps:
Allen = 2 lifetime
Baldacci = 8 lifetime.
OK, we can see that. At least these two stiffs are professed Dems.
What about our two Republican senators who vote with the Dems over 40% of the time. Collins 42% and Snowe 49% of the time with the Rats.
Feb 19 to Mar 4 is 13 days, for a package to go between two post offices that are an easy drive. I ended up meeting my client in person on Feb 23 and 24, mailed a Patent Application to the USPTO on February 25th, and had the Domestic Return Recipt in hand BEFORE the local Maine mail was delivered.
Your mileage may vary.
Now, more news of a postal nature - letter carriers on foot routes should beware of dogs.
Dear Editor,
On the night of March 11, the County Republican Chairman began to get calls that the Republican ballot boxes had not been delivered.
The County Clerk had told the County Sheriff's office to deliver all boxes, Republican and Democrat. This has been the procedure for at least 54 years. I have personal knowledge of this because I learned to drive delivering voting boxes, when my father was sheriff here. This is not a new thing even though there were no Republican boxes back then.
It appears that the Jasper County Democrat Party Chairman, Frank Williams, told deputies that there was no need for them to deliver the Republican boxes. Without benefit of any authority, his instructions were accepted and followed until Republicans realized that none of their boxes were being delivered for the Primary.
The Sheriff's office apologized to the Republican Chairman, but the Democrats seem to consider this a very funny joke. There could be serious consequences when you start interfering with one of our most important rights. Perhaps some elected county official should get with their county chairman and explain the election laws to him. In the end it caused a hardship and embarrassment to our County clerk.
A copy of this letter is also being sent to the office of the Secretary of State.
Well, how about "standard practice" in the real world?
Read the rules for any contest run by corporations, etc. There's always a reminder that "entries must be postmarked no later than...."
Because in the real world, everyone knows enough not to rely on the speed and efficiency of the bloated bureaucracy know as the "U. S. Postal Service."
This is apparently too impenetrable a concept for politicians to grasp.
Maybe when they start charging as much as 1.00 a letter, they'll be less corrupt.
Baldacchi, Chilli Pepper, (my name for her). If our guys do not get their names in print a LOT, we are going to lose this election again!!!
Maine is super democratically controlled. We desperately need a change. If Baldy becomes our Governor, you think its bad now under King? Just wait. Baldacchi is a control freak. The power would go to his head in unbelievable ways.
For Gods sake people, if your not registered to vote, PLEASE register. The primarys are less then three months away! Please!
King has used our tax dollars to renovate the State House; to add heated steps, and elevator music. Then he cries foul because there is no money for health care. Not to mention this asinine lap tops for 7th and 8th graders. What happened to the private funding he was supposed to get? Now looks like the Dems have awarded him another $25 million for lap tops.
Two sites a Republican in Maine should look at closely regarding Baldacci:
Baldacci wants to be the next governor of Maine. Does he represent you?
Still, delivery of mail cannot take place until the individual sending that mail enters it. If they wait until election day, it will not arrive until after election day.
But all of that means nothing. What we have here is the Democratic Party and the State legislature in the State of Maine violating a federal voting rights law and apparantly no one cares to complain, nor do they know where to go to complain. I would suggest that they go to a court of original jurisdiction at the federal level and file suit against Maine for violating "Motor Voter". Cite the George Bush case. Ask for $100 million!
Come on out and face me like a man.
