Dear Editor,
On the night of March 11, the County Republican Chairman began to get calls that the Republican ballot boxes had not been delivered.
The County Clerk had told the County Sheriff's office to deliver all boxes, Republican and Democrat. This has been the procedure for at least 54 years. I have personal knowledge of this because I learned to drive delivering voting boxes, when my father was sheriff here. This is not a new thing even though there were no Republican boxes back then.
It appears that the Jasper County Democrat Party Chairman, Frank Williams, told deputies that there was no need for them to deliver the Republican boxes. Without benefit of any authority, his instructions were accepted and followed until Republicans realized that none of their boxes were being delivered for the Primary.
The Sheriff's office apologized to the Republican Chairman, but the Democrats seem to consider this a very funny joke. There could be serious consequences when you start interfering with one of our most important rights. Perhaps some elected county official should get with their county chairman and explain the election laws to him. In the end it caused a hardship and embarrassment to our County clerk.
A copy of this letter is also being sent to the office of the Secretary of State.
Sidestepping the Constitution and fairness is a joke to the Democrats.
